I've just been informed/reminded that I'm going to be in East Sussex for four days at the end of next week.
Can anyone provide me with decent places to ride? South Downs look like it might be promising, but anything close to Lewes would also be handy.
Thanks.
There's some routes up there ^ in the trail guide section.
& have a mosey about at Stamner park .
If you're close to Lewes then maybe lookup Stanmer Park (north of Brighton) or Friston Forest (a few miles east, to the south of Alfriston). Both have lots of unofficial singletrack trails running through the woods, usualy best found by keeping your eyes open to what's off the sides of main paths but enough to keep you occupied for a few hours.
Alternatively there's lots of bridleways that go up, along and down the hills themselves. South Downs Way being the main route along the top with numerous long climbs up to it and fast descents back down. My favourites being around BlackCap hill just to the west of Lewes.
If it were me and I had the time I'd ride from Lewes to the top of Firle Beacon, head East along to Friston, do a loop around there and back. Be weary of which direction the wind is going if riding along the tops, can make for painful progress if it's a windy day but with a decent tailwind I've done 40mph uphill before!
Hope this helps.
What Painey said.
I'll be riding Friston this weekend, I usually add a SDW loop around Lullington Heath and Windover Hill too. Nice pubs in Jevington and Litlington if you're after refreshments.
If you post up on our forum http://brightonmtb.org/ or join the Facebook group [url=
you may well find someone who's willing to show you round.
Or join one of the regular Tuesday and Thursday evening rides from Sussex University. Tuesday's the faster paced ride and takes in Stanmer Park and/or the Downs (depending on the weather and how people feel), Thursdays are always around Stanmer. Details are on the website.
