You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
My cave is a small corner of the garage and ive done fairly well at utilising the space.
However, I'm forever losing bits and spares in this box or that. How do you organise your space and do it cheaply? Just looking for some cheap novel ideas.
Anyone use the garage rafter space effectively?
I'm prepared for the responses of have less clutter (Mrs CJR's approach!) or find more space!
Thanks
Chris
Jars, pots, plastic storage boxes? Mostly though get rid of the crap. You don't need 1pad for the brakes you don't own etc 🙂
just bike stuff?
I have a few tool boxes + a drawer.
box of 'house' tools, box of decorating tools, 2 boxes of bike tools - one more common than the other (eg. headset press is in the less often used one).
Stuff i need all the time: Allen keys, tyre levers & puncture repair kit are in the drawer. Spare parts waiting to go on a bike, also live in the drawer.
Spares split between a big box and a small organiser.
Mostly though get rid of the crap.
This is key, along with tiding after working.
Wall mounting all the tools has been a godsend for me, if wall space allows you should definitely try it

Loads of these
And then I made some shelves from 20mm box section using 8' x 4' 18 mm floorboards as the actual shelf. Will post a pic later it fits right across the back of the garage. Really good
I've got very small garage space and just one bike, so relatively easy for me to cope. I periodically sell/ bin parts that I'm not using/ going to use. It's very therapeutic and makes managing what I have/ need much easier.
I've got a plastic set of 4 drawers (similar to this from BandQ) that holds various stuff, should be enough for all spares/ tools etc. Plastic container on top holding lubes/ sprays/ rags.
Various sized Tupperware boxes also great for keeping bolts/ pads/ bleed kits/ zip ties etc tidy within the drawers.
Have space for a couple of shelves, the screw up lids being stuck to the bottom will be used from above post. Great idea.
Also check out the scrap metal prices...
I've got a nice wall mounted holder for my allen keys etc.
Trouble is, when I work on my bikes I NEVER put them back. Used to leave them in various places in the garage, until I dug out one of those desk tidy things! (From another part of the garage). Now everytime I use a tool it gets put back in the same place. There are allen keys, little spanners, picks, scissors.. all stored in the same thing, easy to find and/or put away if I get the urge. I'm impressed with my genius invention.
Screw up through the lids of jam jars into the underside of shelves / rafters....
I've never really understood this, far more awkward to get down and put back in place than just using a shelf and you know that once you take them to where you are working you'll knock them over! All they do is save a shelf and you can't put anything too close to them on a shelf below either. I made a shelf from ply screwed up to one of the roof joists and jars line both sides and when I knock them over there is always the chance that I've put the lid back.
Oh, and for spares I've got this shelving thing that was a bookshelf in my kid's room. All the spares go into storage boxes shoved into it. I so need to chuck out a load of spares. Ski bar-ends? Why have I got those? old cut-down seatposts, a Campag Italian thread BB... throw them out!
OK, I think my wife (and the STW hive-mind) is right (as usual)... I need to throw out the crap first then sort the remainder!
Nice ideas so far, thanks all.
Some tidy shelves and boxes should sort it.
I quite like the under shelf jars though!

Use washers with the screws. Clamps the lids tightly to the shelf and stops them bending if you fill the jars with heavy stuff.

THe advantage is that you can clearly see what's in each jar without having to remove them from the shelf.. They are easy to reach up, unscrew, remove item and replace.

But why??? what's the advantage of putting them on a shelf. I used to like the idea, I've no idea why but I always knew I wanted to do it when I had my own garage or shed. And then when I did get a shed I actually took the time to think about it and could come up with not a single reason as to why it was better than just putting the jars on shelves. I really wish I could, I still secretly want to do it but it's just illogical. It's like having a tool board when you actually use your tools in more than one location. You still can't help wanting one but it makes no sense at all. I know I'm not alone in this affliction but I know I'm not alone and I want to make sure others are not drawn into this folly 🙂
But why???
It doesn't make sense to keep a special stick for stirring paint either. We still do it though.
Just embrace the chaos my friend. 😉

Thats completely the wrong way around.
The way to get everything organised is
A) Look at the amount of crap you've got and guestimate how many containers it will take to house it all
B) Buy that many plus a few more to allow you to properly sort things into a some sort of 'catalogue of things' that you haven't quite thought through yet
C) Start organising 'things' into their new categorised containers that don't actually have categories yet but have a sharpie ready to label the containers once you'd decided whats going into them
D) Lay the containers in a line and also have a bin handy. Start to sort out all the 'things' into boxes but make sure anything thats actually useless, broken or redundant goes in the bin
E)Stand back and admire your full bin, your array of empty containers and a single full container labelled 'Misc Shite'

Sorted!

You've been in my garage looking at my old wooden spoons haven't you!

F) Affix the "Misc Shite" Container to the underside of a shelf with screws*, against all logic and with the sole intention of upsetting avdave2

If you've only got one shelf, you are utilising space above it and below it. Plus if you don't got any shelves but you have a ring beam as pictured, then it's using space otherwise redundant. Simple innit*.
*Disclaimer - I don't have any jars screwed to any shelves at all but can understand its basis in logic. 🙂

Good luck with finding screws that'll hold the skip full of misc shite I own to the underside of any shelf 🙂

Just build another shelf under the jars...
If you've only got one shelf,
I'd say put another shelf up but clearly the basically worthless excuse of a man who would think screwing your jars to an existing shelf is a good idea wouldn't really be up to the task. For all of you maybe call a man in who'll bring everything in a tool bag or maybe even a box and put it up for you. If you make him a nice cup of tea he might even let you have a go with his hammer utilising some offcuts and the nails lying about on your garage floor cos none of your bloody jars have lids on them!!!!! 🙂
