I'm currently running 175mm XTR m970 cranks with a superstar N/W chainring, I'm getting loads of pedal strikes on my banshee (always run it in the lowest/slackest setting) so feeling the need for shorter cranks. The BB needs replacing and I would like to go up to a 32t chainring so I'm not tied in to keeping any of the existing setup.
I would like something of similar weight and stiffness to the XTRs and ideally something with readily available replacement chainrings (read cheap, superstar etc).
Current shortlist is M8000 XT, Hope, RF Aeffect/turbine/sixc/next sl.
Anything else I should be looking at and opinions on the above appreciated.
XT M780? The chainline is better on triples than doubles and they're the common 104 BCD 4 bolt pattern. About £100 new and the three unwanted rings sell for about £25. Consider 165mm too, I'm just over 5'10 with long legs and think I prefer 165 to 170 for pedalling. Definitely prefer 165 to 175!
XTR M970 is still a good option tbh. But if you're 1x then direct mount could make more sense. And in these times of eternal churn raceface's cinch axles could actually be a benefit, you'll be able to adapt a nice crank to next month's 74mm BB shells and 31mm BBs.
I think it's the first time in about a decade that buying any non-Shimano cranks made any sense tbh. I just put some Next SLs on mine, which I might well regret if the pedal inserts fall off, but they're very nice.
Yeah, M970 are excellent cranks but it's rare to find 170mm ones in reasonable condition, or people want the price of a lightly used kidney for them!
The Next SLs are my favourite, but they completely blow the budget and I would be worried about durability, I'm not the lightest/smoothest rider out there!
Chiefgrooveguru, it would be the single ring specific version of the XT cranks if I went for them rather than double/triple variant.
I was just in the market for 170mm cranks and was indeed looking at some of the older XTR models (not keen on new finish). In the end I plumped for 2008 model (!) SLX M665s from CRC... Not XTR weight but that's the one with the steel axle and pedal inserts to take right hiding. Still lighter and stiffer than what I was coming from!
New XTR.
I ran XX1 cranks for a while. It the same self extracting bolt system that RF use made me want to smash myself in the face with a hammer. It is literally 'so' bad when trying to set up a chain device or having to repeatedly put on/remove crank arms.
Yes they have odd bolt placements, but I'm happy to live with that just so I don't have to use any crank with a self extracting bolt.
I have the turbines, no real complaints with the cranks, work well, light enough, look good. My only minor niggle is i didn't realise the q-factor was wider than normal when buying which offended my ocd. However, after the first 100 yards I didn't notice any difference when riding.
I have a suspicion the RF rings dont last as well as the NW from hope I had previously though.
Thread hijack alert........also after some 170mm cranks but need to be direct mount, 24mm axle and will fit a 28T ring.
There are some X01 carbons on CRC for £220 odd but must be cheaper/heavier ali solutions. Currently have a GXP bottom bracket with some X1-1000 cranks but willing to change the BB if I have to, 73mm shell
cheers
I reckon the best value option for stiff light and single ring is spider less x01 cranks, you can pick the arms up for £150 or so if you hunt about. Direct mount ring from your favourite ring supplier and you're away for around £2-250 with a new BB.
Otherwise you've got raceface nexts at the top of the pay scale and old xt (triple version as mentioned above) for the best cheap but still reasonably light and stiff option. New xt single specific but less ring options about with the funny bcd.

Aeffect? Has a shimano-compatible 24mm spindle and uses the cinch chainrings. I have the fatbike version, pretty nice. Not the cheapest, £90 for arms only or £130 with BB and ring (but you can only buy them with 30 and 32t)
Saint cranks are pretty good I'm surprised more people don't use them
Have got two sets and they're both noticeably v.stiff - lots of forward thrust when making progress
Aeffect is interesting especially as it works with Shimano BB's which I have some of, cheers
I nearly bought some DMR Axe, but I ran out of money. Ended up buying Zee (used before and was happy).
The Turbines that came on my new bike seem reasonably nice

For the OP... I have a mint condition, 4 ride old, set of Racefae Next SL 170mm arms for sale if interested... Can include a lightly used 30T ring too. Email in profile.
The Aeffects are fantastic. There's barely any weight penalty over the significantly pricier Turbines, I haven't noticed they're any less stiff with their 24mm axle vs a 30, and because of that axle they fit on very cheap Shimano standard HT2 BB's. Highly recommended... Oh and because of the 24mm hollow steel axle, I can use my Andy Stand again, something that 30mm alloy axled cranks don't afford you!
mboy - I googled a bit earlier and it seemed to imply they take slightly different cinch(?) rings to their chainsets which have 30mm axles? Correct or total nonsense? 🙂
They're definitely compatible. They might come with different rings, or something? But I've swapped one from my aeffects to my nexts.
I think the only significant difference is that normal cinch cranks have replacable axles so you can jump from standard to standard, whereas aeffect are fixed.
ok ta 🙂

They're not direct mount, but the cheapest (reasonable quality) I could find for 24mm axle cranks with a 28t ring was Shimano M8000. Using a North Shore Billet 28t ring.

You should be able to get the cranks for ~£90 and the chainring for ~£33. (I run this set up and it works perfectly.)
I have some Hope ones which I have been impressed with, bit more involved to fit and pricey but seem durable and showing very little heal rub. They do a boost ring as well if that a factor.
I'm getting loads of pedal strikes
Saints. Pretty much designed for the abuse clumsy oafs like yourself dish out.
and go 165mm not 170.
Ohhh I nearly forgot! On my 170 aeffects on the fatbike, they're actually not shorter arms, it seems they're just the same forging as the 175 with the hole drilled further up. Doesn't really bother me, I'm a pedal striker really not a crank striker but it's a slight dick move so maybe something to take into account.

Out if interest why are you selling the nexts?
hoke - MemberWow! If you're catching pedals on a fatbike you truely are a spastic and there really is no hope.
Yeah you're right, that massive q factor certainly doesn't have any effect on pedal strikes when riding technical trails 😆 PS, you div.

Eyes a bit bigger than belly a couple of months ago! LOL. In all seriousness, prefer the simplicity of sticking with 24mm axles, and the convenience that affords. The Next's are awesome but given there's less than 200g weight penalty with the Aeffects (seriously, those recommending XT's over the Aeffects are way off!) and given I've now got a 160mm travel bike I thought I'd get a bit precious about running super light cranks on it.
Maybe try sending Fionn (on PB) a message. I got my brand new M970 170mm's from her last year. £150 including the rings, removal tools and BB.
Sold my old XT for about £50, the new XTR rings for £70. New chainset & BB cost me £30..bargain!
