can you route the cable through Sora shifters out the bottom and along bars, ala the brake cable, rather than out the side? Out the side look scruffy...

as above No, but the new 4700 series Tiagra has gone to under-tape routing like the 105 and higher groups, that's your cheapest (Shimano) option for under-tape routing if you value the looks over the reliability.

but it does mean it's very free running, and 9spd sora has a higher cable-pull per gear than 10spd tiagra.

it's a more reliable system, which means shimano are no doubt working hard to balls it up.

Yeah it works great, and I'm not gonna be swapping it anytime soon, I'm using a triple, just wondered if I could neaten it up a bit like the big boys do!!
