Had a bizarre incident yesterday where another cyclist and myself stopped for a chat both thinking it was someone else and it was a minute or so before we both realised we didn't know each other at all!!

30 Seconds into the chat I realised it wasn't my mate Graham

60 seconds into the chat he says "You're not my mate John are you"

I guess helmets, dark glasses, neck buffs, etc, don't make it easy to identify folk on bikes. Still we had a pleasant chat about our bikes and local trails and then went on our merry way. Can't do that in a car can you 🙂

What's your mistaken identity story?

I've chatted to a lady that I thought was a mum from school - but wasn't - she worked at the local council, but our conversation was initiated by talking about bicycle use, so was meaningful, it was just my initial expectation that was wonky.

I once stopped to chat to my uncle while he was walking the dog. It wasn't my uncle, and dogwalker looked very puzzled!

My mate at uni had a twin. We lived in Edinburgh.

The twin was my sister's house mate in Dundee.

I couldn't really tell the difference between the twins. Two times I was stopped mid conversation as they realised I thought it was the other twin I was talking to.

Was riding one day and an Aston Martin went past, pulled over and he got out the car to talk to me. Then realised that I wasn't his mate, which was a bit awkward.

But he reckons that you can get a road bike in the back of an Aston, so when I win the lottery....

When I was a young priest serving in northern Canada, I saw one of my parishioners walking down the pavement and so I called out to him.

He paused and waited for me as I jogged toward him so I could join him on his walk.

It was only after I got right up to him and we took a few steps together that I realised the man I was walking with was not my parishioner at all, but the local pharmacist. I was quite embarrassed, but we got along well, and I ended up using his pharmacy whenever we needed medicine and/or advice for the remaining years I spent working in that town.

My 12 y.o. son spotted his headteacher on the ferry. I told son that it would be rude not to say hello, so off he went to greet the bloke. In Welsh. On a ferry from Thorshavn to Seydisfjordur. Bloke was a Danish doppelganger and very perplexed indeed.

I also had a good chat with no.2 son at a school fundraiser. He was 14 at the time, lived at home etc. It turns out that the person I was talking to was not my son. He too was very perplexed, as was his girlfriend. She was one of my pupils.

I moved to a new town in my teens & started having a few convos with people who thought I was "Rimo" found out he worked in a record shop, so one day went to see him - he later described the experience as having a mirror walking towards him. We became mates & both his mum & my dad once got us muddled up.

I once spotted my mates brother in town. Ram up behind him and jumped on his back, knocking him to the floor. It wasn’t my friends brother. It was a very frightened, confused and somewhat angry man who looked a bit like him.

When I was 18 or so I moved to a new area and it was bloody lonely as I knew literally nobody.

One weekend I went to watch a band in a local pub and got chatting to a bloke also watching the band. We agreed to meet again for a drink.

When we did so he kept saying weird stuff like: "I knew it'd be you". I had no idea what he was on about. Eventually he asked me, ok so what are you carrying? To which I had no idea how to answer.

It turned out he'd got phone numbers mixed up and thought I was there to sell him weed 🤣

Not the same thing really but.

My grandpa was in Italy during the war. One day he was sitting against a stone wall resting he heard a voice talking on he other side. '"that's John" he thought to himself. So he shouted out "John is that you"

Yes it was John, his brother. Completely different units. Two brothers who grew up above the grapes in Chester in the midst of a war recognised each other instantly by voice alone

I have a double in Great Malvern. Working up there couple of years back, parked me van on the Main Street and a car driving past slowed right down, rolled there window down and pointed accusingly at me. Bit weird.

staying in the Foley, went down to the bar and become aware of a bloke staring at me, turned to him and he pipes up “you’ve got some *kin cheek showing your face around here’

same evening, walking to a different pub (wasn’t going to stay there), a van gives me some drive by abuse

this was the first time I’ve been to the place. I think my double might be a scally!

Years ago my now wife and I went out on a date to TGI Fridays.   She went to the toilet, came out and walked up to me and said “why have you moved from the table to the bar, we’ve just ordered”?

Only it wasn’t me I was right where she left me, it was my doppelgänger.  We did have a nervous laugh together the three of us, but it was quite a shock as he could’ve easily been my twin!

Last year I did my PMBIA coaching training and in my group was a talented young rider who was at the time the U19 Australasian female champion.

At some point over the three days we had a conversation about how much she looked like a slightly older rider we both know who happens to be the Australian female elite enduro champion... And also a LBS owner that I've bought lots from in the past. She commented that her own mum has accidentally taken race photos of the wrong person before...

A few months later I roll up at a local place and see her. We live about 2.5 hours apart from each other so I was surprised. I went over and started chatting, say "what brings you here?" She (wearing massive sunglasses that hid her face) said "just doing some coaching with Craig".

It took me a little while before I worked out I was talking to the wrong woman. Someone who has a bike shop at the end of the track we were standing next to 🤦🏻

I did explain, but definitely felt like an idiot.

Not me but the mechanic from my local bike shop.  He starts chatting to a customer thinking it’s me. Customer very confused by the line of the conversation.  Takes the other staff to tell mechanic that the customer is not me.  About a month later, in the shop he tells me of my doppelgänger and how weird it was.  Only it’s not me,  it’s the same bloke he accosted previously who is now even more freaked out. And to top it off, the other staff reckoned the customer didn’t really look like me either 😃
