A customer followed me through the door so didn't have time to put my second lock on.
Luckily Mrs Zip arrived just as he was about to attack it and scared him off.
Obviously I'm on this ****s radar now. If the lock had a motion detector connected to either my phone or a device plugged in the wall I would have caught him. Does such a thing exist?
This is the distance between me and a scumbag.

I use an alarmed motion-triggered motorcycle disc lock on mine, in addition to a regular lock.

Very loud so you'd likely hear it inside a shop.
Glad they didn't get it! 😊
😡🤬😡
I think some of tbe SeeSense lights trigger alarms on the phone app if the bike gets moved.
There was also an audible alarm on a front light used to be advertised in the Cycling UK magazine but not seen it recently.
Needs a hook on a wall somewhere in the shop...
Could even put a winch in and hang it nice and high!
Same place on a regular basis? No lock or anything like will fix that.
You can get some (eg Halfords alarmed d lock) which make a terrible racket but they tend towards the lower security ends of things.
Your only real option is to put it in the stock room if such a thing exists.
Got any Sussex Trugs above the door? 😀
I'd try to keep it inside for a few days - scrote will likely be back, and possibly better prepared.
Incidentally, how much are the valentines parrots?
Yeah, bring it in as they will be back.
Got an old rusty beater of a bike instead for the commute?
No lock or anything like will fix that.
Yep.I'm absolutely not trying to victim-blame at all - really, bike theives are c*nts of the highest order.
But a bright orange carbon fibre bike (its whippet, isnt it?) locked outside on what is presumably some kind of shopping/high street - I wouldnt even consider it. At all. Ever. For 30 seconds. You just cannot do it.
It sucks, but its just the truth.
It's been fine for 17 years and most of the time I'm looking at it.
If the front wheel lock was on I would have seen him. The rear wheel I can't see.
I could ride a beater but most of my riding is done to and from work.
Scum bag.
Get a "beater" and saw through the seat post at about 45° and stop about half a mm short of it breaking. Let the thief impale himself through the ass as he rides off. That's what Vlad Dracul would have done.*
Or bring it inside.
* Don't do this.

Not really an issue if tits the 3rd lock on the bike though and it's job is just to make noise whilst the other 2 locks make it too much hassle.
Have been thinking of something like this anyway but main downside seems to be false alarms which might sound trivial until the neighbours complain etc. I had a bike stolen just before XMAS but had it been locked where it was with an audible alarm it would have been triggered all the time.

Lock with an alarm. I think Charlie tested it for stw a few years ago
I've got a See.sense Ace light and have never used the theft alarm, so I just tested it. Works really well - as soon as I touched the bike I received texts to my phone. Worth considering - especially as they are such good lights. The Beam especially.
I got this cheapy thing and just zip-tied it to my D lock: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B096TQVP3K
It makes a loud short buzz if wobbled, then if it's wobbled again within a few seconds it goes off like a panic alarm - loud! You can also adjust the sensitivity. Was fine for my needs, with the bike nearby but just out of sight.
He has also buggered the key hole so that I can't open the lock. I'm assuming that means he intends coming back.
That would be stupid on his part. Means I have to go and get my angle grinder.
I’m assuming that means he intends coming back.
Or - as they clearly already demonstrated - they're a dick.
That would be stupid on his part.
Unless you're Mike tyson you may find that's not true at all.

Charlie reviewed this alarm and tracker, it wasn't a lock.
Could you have some other obstacle that you keep in the shop and lock over the top of your own bike to make it even harder for the thief to get to your bike? A big chain kept in the shop and weaved through the wheels would surely slow them down?
Also, maybe consider having some sort of long and pokey implement to hand. A halbeard might be taking things a bit far, but perhaps the sort of pole and hook one might need to pull down a shop awning or get to high stock could be very useful in the ever of a thief with an angle grinder.
Your shop, bring the bike in ! You can get cheap alarmed padlocks - I used to lock one on the handlebars, so if the bike was knocked it would sound a warning, knock it again and the alarm would go off.
That Knog Scout is very good. Out of stock everywhere though.
"But a bright orange carbon fibre bike (its whippet, isnt it?) locked outside on what is presumably some kind of shopping/high street – I wouldnt even consider it. At all. Ever. For 30 seconds”
30 seconds? that’s a lifetime in bike nicking.
A few years back somebody on here lost a Dean TI hardtail outside the apple store regent street, i was waiting for a bus 30m away and watched him lock it with a cable lock through back wheel and walk in, couple of seconds later somebody leaned over the back of the bike and fiddled and then was off, took about 5-8 seconds.
I was too gobsmacked to do anything and too far away on other side of road.
Never lock a nice bike outside, i have an Abus GraniteX plus D-lock but have only used it a handful of times outside my home.i either take the bike inside or use a Brompton.
That Knog Scout is very good.
I have one - it works but the there are several issues with it IMO:
1. Bluetooth range is utterly shite - inside most cafes even with the bike a few meters away, it's out of coverage.
2. The Alarm on the device really isn't very loud at all - by a main road, you'd barely notice it above traffic noise. At home when testing it's OK ish.
3. The Alarm allows too much movement before it sounds, eg you could cut through the lock before it goes off....
Would I but it again? Nope.
He has also buggered the key hole so that I can’t open the lock. I’m assuming that means he intends coming back.
I assume you’ve put the other lock on?
If he’s buggered the lock intentionally he’ll be back tooled up. If with bafle grinder a second lock wont slow him much, get your old lock off somehow and get the bike out of there…
It’s been fine for 17 years and most of the time I’m looking at it.
Thats not a 17 year old bike! Shift those baskets and put it above the door.

Also means he can angle grind the lock with impunity - if challenged by a third party he just shows the damaged lock and says "Look, some scrote has jammed my lock and now I can't unlock it..."
@kayak23 they are £35 for the pair less STW discount of course.
Bike is now 3 padlocked up with the Amazon alarm from above on it's way.
I nearly rode my fat bike today, the prick would have been doing me a favour if he pinched that.
According to Mrs Zip he had a big long bar up his sleeve ,so I'm assuming leverage would be involved.
Thinking a lock and chain might add a different layer of protection.
Also means he can angle grind the lock with impunity – if challenged by a third party he just shows the damaged lock and says “Look, some scrote has jammed my lock and now I can’t unlock it…”
Or when you do cut it, they can shout "oi thief" and enlist a passer by or three in helping to nick your bike that you've just kindly cut the lock off.
Or video it and report it to police as their bike which would at the very least be inconvenient if they came calling.
I mean, I don't give them a lot of clever credit, but most scallywags are very good at pinching stuff, even the ones who are also very good at making the police's job very easy for them.

😂
According to Mrs Zip he had a big long bar up his sleeve ,so I’m assuming leverage would be involved.
Also means very likely they've seen you put the bike there on multiple occasions before...
what did the customer that stopped you locking the bike buy by the way?
Oh, and big long bars are also good for whacking/threatening etc. Be careful if they do come back.
A customer followed me through the door so didn’t have time to put my second lock on.
Nice customer or scrotey customer?
We have an alarmed Oxford disc lock which can fit around the chainring too, so no chance of riding it.
If it was me i'd do all I can to prevent him riding it off should he get through any lock. I doubt the thief would carry an allen key, so I'd turn the handle bars in line with the top tube, takes all of 10 seconds for you to realign when you leave (would also help with passers by not being snagged by them). Also, if its a fixed seatpost, remove and take in the shop with you.
Get rid of those baskets above the door and put your bike there. You can admire it all day long then! 😉
Nice customer or scrotey customer?
All our customers are nice! She bought lots of balloons for her little boy who's just out of hospital.
Ah, that old chestnut!
She bought lots of balloons for her little boy who’s just out of hospital.
And disappointed not to be getting the new bike be was promised 😉
.
At least with that sort of shop you can run outside shout HAPPY BIRTHDAY and silly string him in the eyes 😀
you can buy an angle grinder proof lock nowadays. if you cant hide it then the best lock available is the next best thing. Hiplok D1000
@stwhannah might have been in the mag in the grit section few years ago....
Seem to remember he got sand in his hole...
