I was looking at new discs but I don't know which size to buy.

Wasn't it Hope that made 183mm rotors originally, instead of 180? But now they make both. Some people on the internet suggest that the caliper design actually needs 183mm but surely it's just a case of which adapter you buy?

Brakes are 2007 Mono Minis, fork is Salsa Carbon Firestarter with 74mm post mount. Adapter is not yet purchased.

Yes, Hope did 183s

My 2007 minis work fine with 180s with the right (180) adapter.

Worst case you'd space out the caliper with a washer but you won't need to.

The Mono Mini 2007 originally came with 183s, then?

I can't actually recall. I've certainly run it with a 183 at the front but it just had an adapter which was for 183 rather than 180

Or to put it another way, I've used my 07 minis with various discs and I've always just used the proper adapter and they've worked fine be it 180, 183 or 203.

Pretty sure some of the older hopes (from when they had different number calipers for disc size) had 165 and 185 rotors too~ a bit of creativity with washers on the mounts can overcome such silliness in this fabulous age of post mount.

Ok thanks. That's what one would expect.

I see that Shimano are a lot cheaper.. but I rather like the look of the Hopes.. and I do wonder how thick the stainless layer is on Ice Tech.

Yeah, Hope have done 160, 165, 180, 183, 200, 203 and probably others too. I've never had any issue using them with the right adapter and when I've not had the right adapter, washers worked fine.

Second hand is the way to buy them FWIW, all the ones I've bought have been straight and with little to no wear.

Well I have some 18x already. The problem is that at 8 years old I'm beignning to suspect that their age has been contributing to iffy peformance. Possibly due to some kind of glazing, but they are also worn concave.

I fitted some 160s I found in the bin with about 2 years use, because I didn't have an adapter to fit the fork, and with a bit of bedding in they are much better than the 18x. So I'm thinking of taking a punt on some new 18x.

and in the olden days hope were 145-165-185-205 on C2s/o2s/XC4 and DH4/E4 - until the mini came out as a silver 2 piece - then it was 140/160/180

which model minis came with 183 and 203 ? those were primerily shimano sizes.

all my various ages of minis(5 sets in the house) inc the originals right up to race x2s have got 160 or 180 rotors on - some of the old IS mount ones even have 180/160 F/R etched on them.

whats important with minis is that you get the brake track right - it changes over the years as the pad shape changes and if you get it wrong youll be breaking on the arms of the rotors.

I've got 2007 mono minis (the silver ones) which came with the 183mm front / 160 rear saw pattern rotors, was actually considering getting some standard 180mm mounts & using the Shimano RT76 rotors as I quite like those & already have them on another bike.

I thought I had read that the extra 3mm came about due to clearance issues with certain rotor / brake / fork combos, although that might be made up...

brake track is the part the pad contacts on.

there might be milage in that mjc - certainly rings a bell of an era when hope hubs on certain rotor sizes and hub combos(usually shimano hubs) used to clatter the spokes without filing the corner off the caliper - maybe thats where they needed the 3mm.

IME most current brake rotors work with the 07 minis - the brake track is the middle range - not massive like old C2s and not super narrow like the original E4(?) oe whatever those early 4 pots were called.
