I've been offered a new computer as a graduation present and I'd like to have one built, I have a friend who can help me build it but he's too busy at the moment to help spec it.
I will mainly use it for word, internet, music and some gaming. I'd like a fairly large 23" LCD monitor as it will be used for my xbox and a blu-ray player. I already have a 1TB hardrive, keyboard, mouse and speakers.
Would like it to be upgradeable so I can keep it up to date and have around £700 to spend.

Thanks!!
Gaz

How good is your mate at building PCs and how likely is he to help if things go wrong? Only asking like ...

I used to think I needed a "Proper" PC so I could run various CAD packages and posh games at home, but TBH I've not looked back since getting what was actually a rather basic spec laptop ~4 years ago...

Unless you are a serious PC gamer, I'm not really sure there's any point in getting a proper PC if it's primarily going to be a "Word & Web" computer you'll be able to get a decent Laptop for ~£400 with some prudent shopping and the rest can go on a proper sized TV to plug the Xbox/Blueray into...

Honestly the portability of a laptop over a traditional PC is worth having, especially if you've just finished Uni' and hence might be on the move a bit over the next couple of years (Huge assumption there)...

Some gaming?

If you're after playing anything released within the last couple of years you'll need a fairly decent GFX card with a matching PSU to back it up.

£700 quid is more than enough but budget for at least £200 for a graphics card if PC gaming really is for you. You state Xbox gaming so unless your hardcore i'd stick with that

Overclockers do some pretty nice prebuilt systems or system bundles...i'd serioulsy check them out

Football manager really, would be nice to be able to play it with a large database at a decent speed. Mainly play games on xbox so it isn't a priority

Have a look at Chillblast too, couple of people I know have them and they're great value for money and the customer service is excellent.

+1

I have one of their custom builds and can vouch for their all round service. But that's only really relevant if you want someone else to build it instead of your mate.
