Can anyone recommend a sold secure gold rated padlock. Ideally as cheap as possible.....
I already have a chain. Just need a padlock for it.
I only want it to comply with the insurance so doesn't need to be the best of the best (just have a gold rating) - if they get as far as the bike it'll either get the frame cut or be removed one way or another.

Discus type padlocks are quite good:

I might be wrong, but usually when I've seen the 'sold secure' ratings it's for bike locks, and not 'generic' padlocks. I'd check the Squire website and look at their range.

If it's for insurance, have you made sure your chain is up to spec ?

Chain is already a gold sold secure 12mm jobby (£100 on its own) but unless the padlock is also gold rated it's pointless.

Trying to find a cheap gold sold secure padlock is like rocking horse poo - it seams to be cheapest to buy a small gold rated Oxford D lock (£25) than a proper padlock that's been rated.

£100 for the chain ?

I thought my 12mm Abus chain was expensive 😉

Will a 'cheap' padlock really be up to the same standard as the chain you have ?

I use an Abus Granite padlock with my chain (padlock cost £90), but I'm not sure that uses the 'Sold Secure' rating system - something beyond that I'm sure.

Going for gold standard is pretty high and normally means it doesn't come cheap, a quick google reveals this as just a padlock only buy:

Avoid Oxford padlocks, especially the ones with that type of key.

The locks are stiff and the keys are made of cheese. I've got a very expensive paperweight with a snapped key in it!

Thanks - ended up getting Abuse 83 53 for £28....
Went on the soldsecure Web site and did a search (should have done that in the first place).

The £100 chain was from when I lived in Bristol and commuted to work each day and need a suitable lock (left at work). Didn't have one bike stolen in three years of commuting. But in moving house a few times since I managed to loose all of the spare sets of keys for the original master lock padlock I was using.
