Looking for some for servicing forks , fork-dampers shocks etc. So need to grip well with not too much force.

I have a couple ,one plastic which deforms too much and slips out the vice the other alloy again a bit pants.

So what's the enthusiastic bike fettler using?

Cheers Si

More seriously - in the videos they always use shaft clamps in a vice. What I do instead is get a piece of relatively hard wood like the oak flooring offcuts I am working my way through and drill a hole in it that is the same size or slightly smaller than the shaft I want to grip, then I saw the block in half to make shaft grips. The material you lose when sawing gives enough room for the wood to compress slightly and deform around the shaft. Works quite nicely, I don't think it's failed yet.

Another tip is when stuff doesn't come undone it often has a bit of threadlock on it, so a heat gun can soften it up enough to undo.

For STW approval I'm guessing you have a vintage Record bench vice????

If so Record fibre or aluminium jaws

TF Tuned use some really nice Nylon ones from an Italian brand, can't remember the name for the life of me though.

I've got some from an ebay seller who can custom do them for all different sizes of vice.

I do similar but just cut two V shaped slots.  Haven't died yet
