I like the Endura Thermolite socks. They are rather warm, and pretty cheap too. They are about ankle length.

DeFeet Woolie Boolies - or however they spell them. Best cycling socks going.

Yeah hard to beat woolie boolies, last year I experimented and bought half a dozen different makes of winter cycling socks (i.e. normal socks with a few quid on the price tag). A few are as good as the woolie boolies but wouldn't say any are better.

+1 wollie boolies, favourite socks ever. I have some shorter but lovely smartwool ones too which are so far very tough, they do a variety of wooliness and cuff length iirc.

I found the woolie boolies to be a good fit, warm, didn't bulk up in the shoe and good material but too short up the leg - OK in full length tights but I often wear 3/4's. So went to Matalan and bought some wool walking socks (grey not red). Not top performance but cheap, warm and long - but bought some more the next year and they were a little shorter despite packaging etc. being the same !!!!
