As above, trying to sell some items, people request pics, I click on their profile to get their email address. Can't see. Why? Cue back n forth with PMs etc. Royal pain in the arse.

Just post the pics in your for sale post.

Job done.

You're wondering why people's private email addresses aren't publicly viewable on the internet? Really?

As above, it's really not hard to post images, takes a few clicks even with sites like imgur.

Having to host the pics with a third party then successfully embed them on this site may be a bit of a pain but I've found tinypic.com to make it easy as possible.

Or list on pinkbike and link to that

It did used to be an option to elect to have your email address viewable in your profile - hence why people type "email in profile'.

but.....I'd be an advocate of all adverts without photos being deleted. Why would you not have photos? Just lazy. This forum is not great in many ways but posting photos up could not be simpler.

Yes. Really. When someone says their email is in their profile is it not reasonable to be able to see it?

Using a third party site for images may or may not be easy, but why is that facility not available on this site?

Posting your email address in your profile was common and useful. Phoneticising elements like dot or at and adding obvious spaces were all common tricks to avoid bots and seemed to work well. Surely most people used a semi disposable gmail account or similar rather than their main address though?

Doesn't matter if it's a throwaway account, email addresses are considered 'personal data' under the old data protection and new GDPR laws.

It might have been an option to show your email on your profile but no website will be making their customers email addresses publicly visible unless they're completely unaware of data protection.

Have you heard of something called GDPR? STW would be failing in their duty by not protecting email addresses and the fines would bankrupt the company. (effective 25th May)

So what if I wrote my email in a post? Is that not the same?

Posting photos is not easy. Sometimes it's painless, often it's a complete cluster ****. And yes, that is using the same hosting site and following the same method. Even posting a link to the album on a hosting site doesn't work every time. I had 53 photos in my clearout thread, all linked properly, then this site randomly logged me out whilst submitting.

It's purely witchcraft how this works from minute to minute.

Hm, I hadn’t realised GDPR prevented customers deliberately exposing their data, I guess it’s the point that the business provides a mechanism to facilitate this?  That’s going to cause hell if people start posting addresses and phone numbers in plaintext in the main forum thread.

I'm not sure on the implications of users directly revealing their own information, but any business has to keep all personal data that has been entrusted to them secure - the NHS got fined £180k 2 years ago for simply emailing 700 people on an email using the 'to' email field rather than the 'bcc' field, therefore revealing 700 customers email addresses to each other.

Revealing each users email addresses on each public profile would be no different, however it's all about how your data is managed and stored. When you give your personal information to a business you don't expect it (email address, name, dob, address etc) to be used without your permission or published for anyone to see.

If you choose to post your information publically I'm pretty sure that means you're automatically giving your consent for it to be used that way, but I may be wrong.

Well in that case maybe this is overreaction? It was never compulsory to put your email, real name or town on the profile but some did. Maybe a notice would have been sufficient?

It doesn't. I suspect some people above are just talking out of their arses.

Q; "Do you know a good GDPR analyst?"

A: "Yes, I do"

Q; "Can you send me his email address"?

A:" No, I can't"

Yup, I used it once to pick someone on here at random and use their email address plus their posting history to expose a security flaw in an online retailer's website.

Nowadays we can just PM someone our email address if we want to, and we don't have it pinched by people who want to use it elsewhere, even if they're only proving the existence of a flaw rather than actually exploiting it. Happy days.

Yes, despite my response above a proper pm system is way better than having email addresses in profiles irrespective of the GDPR influence.
