Pick 'em up dirt cheap. Pretty much bomb proof and you won't be bothered about scratching it etc.
I've had two - diesel I bought for £450 lasted 4 years before I got rid, and a petrol for £500 lasted 3 years before I got rid, and only then 'cos I can't justify having it anymore (have use of wifes car. use train and bicycle for work). Both were bought with the intention of having for 12 months and then getting rid, but both went through MOT without much bother or cost.
Used both for many weekends away and was always pretty amazed at how much you could get in - I've even slept in one of them with the bike inside at the same time.
I love my Focus estate (1.8 TDDi). Goes for ever on a tank, easy 500 miles, 3 adults and 3 bikes, or 2 adults and 2 bikes, both wheels on!
parts and service cheap, insurance pretty good too.
What's not to like?
APF
Our 1995 Audi A6, 265k miles and never broken down. Ever. 850 miles on a tank.
I love my Ford mondeo 2.0 Tdi. need to get rid of it soon though as I need to free up some money. if you're interested, email is on profile. looking for 6k ONO 72k on the clock!

new or used? Budget?
Used:
Estate: Octavia, volvo V50 or bigger, Focus/Astra estates or any other popular car.
Small car: any with a tow bar bike rack 😀
New:
Skoda Yeti for both.
Mondeo probably, as a balance of value etc.
Focus is ludicrously big in the back, considering the size of the thing, if you want something that drives (and parks) like a small car but carries stuff like a big car, it's fab.
Mk3 petrol engined Mondeo, estate or hatch, it's good value for money, cheap to run, comfortable, and a decent enough drive.
Small car, Honda Jazz. Incredibly roomy for a small car and seats fold completely flat.
thought I read on 'ere that you will struggle to get a bike in a volvo v50
honda accord looks massive but expensive
I don't love my clio - but appreciate the 199K miles it's put in.
I bought it with 34k on the clock.
takes two bikes(wheels off)no problemo.
However when it dies I'll probably get a van.
clio was awful to get bikes in the back. both wheels and seatpost!
but.
i could easily get 2 people, bikes, kit and camping gear for a week in it. or 3 people, kit and bikes on the back.
and
it would get to scotland and back (from southampton) on 60 L diesel.
Skoda Fabia 1.2 can get 2 people and bikes with week of camping stuff in the boot! Ace. Not Seat Alhambra, wheel the bikes in without taking anything off, and could probably live in the car for a week as well! Insane amounts of room.
+1 for the diesel peugeuot estate, in my case a 306. Bought mine for £300, I've done 50k+ in it, and its cost me literally peanuts to keep running smoothly. It's boot is bigger than my C class Merc estate, plenty for a couple or more bikes, (although I swear by a towball thule) and it does 50mpg all day long. Doesn't rust, either... I take a perverse pleasure in the fact it does everything a car that costs twenty or thirty times as much does, just as well.
Is it a van is it a car?Acouple of friends have the citroen berlingo or one of its derivatives,we've had 4 biglads and 4 bikes in it with no probs.
another diesel peugeot 306 estate here,
real world calculated 50 mpg
the boot is massive
not the coolest car and my non turbo is pretty slow,
but cheap insurance - group 4 and cheapish car tax £165 for the year
you can find them pretty cheap aswell
Diesel peugeot estate owners club ftw! 😆 for people who spend ten times more cash on a push bike than they do on their car...
I found a £3k 100k mile VW passat with wood and leather, 2.8L, V6, 28v, estate... Is jolly effective on long drives to the mountains.
The mpg is shocking but it goes out a couple of times a month. And on a long drive it's money well spent.
And let's not forget that petrol will never be this cheap again.

Christ, thats a sobering thought...
