Rode some rocky stuff at the weekend and inevitably shredded a "cheap" £30 Nobby Nic. New Magic mary is £36. I'll think twice about "shredding gnar" in the future 🙁
Cool story bro, I know
Yea, tyres are expensive, £50-70 expensive. £36 is the new cheap. 😉
Yea and that's a soft compound that will be done in months. I know I have to suck it up and that's biking an all 😣
I was just about to say, £36 is cheap these days!
Things were simpler when there was a size with a few builds and widths for different disciplines - now they're making 3 sizes and 5 widths, or rather 5 ranges of widths - standard, plus, or wide trail I think they're called now and fat.
Economies of scale all to ****.
Ebay usually has tyres that'd pass for new aside from a little dirt for about half the price of new ones.
on one is your friend
chunky monkeys are stilla good shout, even if they arent quite up there with a maxxgrip wt shorty
Good shout on eBay I will look there next time

<div>I was about to say that rubber has got more expensive, but apparently it hasn't: https://tradingeconomics.com/commodity/rubber</div>
To be fair though, they do play a massive part in stopping your face from hitting rocks at every corner
They are mostly still hand made which is why they are so spendy.
You missed out the word "lovingly" Rockhopper.
They are handwoven by artisan craftsmen and lovingly dipped in organic, vegan rubber, sustainably sourced in Guatemala.
Or something like that

Weren't they handmade a few years ago when they were half the price?
Tyres became expensive when tyre companies realised that the NWOMCC* would spend ludicrous amounts for anything with the 'right' name on it.

What size MM can you get for 36 quid?
I have 2 26" MM that are barely used...
I got 1 1/2 rides out of a new £50 tyre. Slit the sidewall. Bad luck I hope as I have ordered another as I really like the volume and tred pattern of the continental mountain king 2.6.
My bike tyres are more expensive than my van tyres.
I need a new schwalbe rock razor 29er tyre but couldn't find a decent price so I'll just leave the winter nobby nic on the back.
If you've split the side wall on a new tyre repair it. Someone suggested stitching it with dental floss and the gluing a patch on the inside or wedging tyre bungs in between. At worst it will take a tube.
If you can't run tubes anymore sell it/give it away.
The big players want a piece of the pie (Goodyear and Michelin have upped their offerings) so the numbers must be good or they would leave the market to the specialists and little fish.
Glad I'm not the only one that has noticed this.
I remember Conti Verts being the go to tye and they were (are?) stupidly cheap in comparison.
2008 the dollar was at 1.8 to the pound, today 1.3, throw inflation into the mix, throw in oil prices,
and cheap is no longer cheap.
I seem to remember that late 90's expensive was £30, which today is c£50. Tyres aren't any more "expensive", just feels that way.
