..... How good are they really?
I've just fitted an XT one and bouncing the bike around in the garage the chain is nice and snug, and doesn't slap on the chain stay.
Will I be able to get away without an ugly chain stay protector now then?
IMO the silent riding and lack of chips on the chain stay are fantastic but the thing I liked the most was, due to the chain not being as slack the power from the cranks felt stronger and much more immediate, ie I never felt like the chain slipped when I went to pedal. I wont go back to a standard MTM mech again.
So I should be OK then? Might put some sort of clear strip on the top of the stay just in case. 🙂
Pete I have one a it is great at stopping chain slap but the draw back is that shifting is really stiff and not half as smooth in my experience. Lots of nasty chain crunching sounds. Anyway on my 9 speed hard tail I have just turned the tensioning screw right up and it has a similar effect but without the nasty side effects. I am of course open to suggestions if anybody thinks I have something sent up wrong.
Just remember to turn the clutch to "off" when you take the wheel out or you'll bugger it up.
😳

Only noticed a slightly heavier shift so far. Nothing to worry about. Everything is brand new XT. 🙂
I have a Shadow Plus on my fatbike and used a strip of that 3M rubber tape on the chainstay. So far, it has zero chain marks.
But I would definitely put something on the chainstay. The clutch only works if you turn it on, otherwise it functions like a regular derailleur. Yes, you will forget...
I didn't know that about wheel swapping. Thank you
I didn't appreciate how good my XTR shadow plus was until a wayward stick demolished the outer pulley guide plate and I had to resort back to a standard XT rear mech for a few weeks until I could get parts to repair it..... I'd forgotten how much chain slap and racket there was on rocky/rough downhill sections! Fitted it back for its first ride since repair this weekend, and the difference is quite remarkable...... I'm back to relative stealth mode on descents. Changing feels ever so slightly stiffer but still smooth.
