will a 10sp rear mech work with an 11 sp shifter as the measurement from one side to the other (i.e. largest sprocket to smallest) is the same for a 10 or 11 cassette?

It isn't the same. The largest (innermost) sprocket is inset over the hub.

I don't think that's s deal breaker druid, but something else might be.

pull ratio is different between 10sp and 11sp mechs

ah!

as long as the stops allow full extremity movement the pull ratio of a mrch doesn't matter as the 11 sp shifter does that and matches the cassette spacing surely?

Only with 11s mech.
