I've seen loads of stuff on the intarweb arguing about turbo trainer tyre wear. Didn't think much of it as general opinion seems to be that it's no real issue. However, this was what I gathered together after 40mins on mine today

Burn out by mark_p2511, on Flickr

da fuq? Had a similar amount after using it on Sunday too. Tyre is a bog standard Specialized Espoir Sport, turbo is an old Tacx thing - can't understand any reason why it should be degrading faster than an F1 tyre. Roller is setup just tight enough to ensure it can't slip.

Anyone got any ideas?

Any trainer that has a metal roller surface touching the tyre is going to eat standard tyres, they heat up, get softer and start to wear.

Turbo tyres are designed not to heat up and made from a much harder compound so they don't wear.

Elite, Tacx, Continental & Schwalbe all make them.

If your trainer is of the older style where you screw the roller against the wheel then it may be wound in too hard.

Tyre might be too soft (as in low pressure) tyre might just be a bit shit?

I managed a whole winter on a GP4000 that was too knacked to go on the bike in the first place.

You can get specialist turbo tyres but I'm cheap so didn't bother.

Is it not summer where you are?

Maybe its catching on the plastic that surrounds the metal roller? I also have an old Tacx turbo and I use standard road tyres on it with no obvious wear problems.

I like that look - pretend you're in motoGP and make engine noises while you pedal

Never had a turbo tyre (never used to exist!) and never had major tyre wear.

Looks like you have something odd going on there, tension too high against roller?

Crashed when I hit the 'marbles' getting off the bike 🙁

Tension is as loose as I can get away with. Started with it looser tonight and I could actually smell the rubber (and it was kinda slipping)!

Tyre pressure was at around 100 psi

I find the tyre wear worse when the pressure of the roller against the tyre is too low. I think the tyre slips, due to the low contact pressure, which causes more slip, more heat and more wear...
