New road helmet time, the helmet I'm looking at - Abus Airbreaker - doesn't have MIPS.

Whats the current thinking on MIPS/no MIPS?  Let the debate rage....

I've just been through the same and decided MIPS - shame that the likes of Kask and Abus haven't got on board yet

To go with what sunglasses? 😎

I’d only buy with MIPS or similar these days.  I’m pretty confident it won’t do any harm and optimistic it has genuine benefit so why not.

No real argument, it's up to the user, do you want additional protection in the event of a crash/fall, or not, it's definitely a personal opinion, especially on the type of riding you do.

For me personally, i have MIPS in all the helmets, but i wrote off two helmets last year in crashes so every little definitely helps me!

Also these tests appear pretty sound so if a helmet performed badly here I would be put off

I feel like these days MIPS is just a basic requirement of a helmet they should all have it. Personally I wouldn't buy a helmet without it.

Got hair? You can probably do with out MIPS.

Balder than Phil Mitchell? Get MIPS.

That said, I have hair. My MTB helmet has MIPS, my road helmet doesn't.

hmmm...old helmet was MIPS, got new one without, 2nd time out big wasp went through the large holes and had multiple stings on the head - reckon that MIPS sieve like structure would have stopped it 🙁

I'm with mashr, getting a proper fit should be first and foremost, if that's on a mips helmet then double win.

Hmm.  I have a Scott , Met and Specialzed shaped head, so i think ill defer to a Centrix Plus, Trente or Prevail - all have mips

I have a Centrix Plus MIPS for mtb and its very comfortable.

Do MIPS helmets have some kind of mesh (sieve like structure ) then?

MIPS doesn't, but the term has become a bit like "hoover".

this helmet

Might be more what darkroomtim wants.

I was trying on helmets yesterday and was thinking the same thing, plus road helmets seems to be a lot pricier than mtb ones, often without as many features.

I want something well vented (I find my Kask Mojito fairly warm - I have a 'hot head' it seems) and tried on a few.  Kask Valegro fits well, but no MIPS.  Met Trenta fits well, but MIPS version is significantly more expensive  (the same cost as the Carbon version, which in turn does not come with MIPS).

'Mid' range Spec and Giro helmets are bulky (top end ones are nice but £200 plus).

The other thing which irritates is that quite a few of those I tried snap on glasses arms as well (I use Jawbreakers with the arms fully in as they otherwise catch n the Mojio's cradle).

I was thinking about one of these:

https://www.sigmasports.com/item/Endura/MT500-MTB-Helmet/MCZC

And i won't be trying it on because I don't go in shops any more!

£4000 bill for an afternoon in the whistler medical center (thankfully paid by travel insurance).

No memory of the crash that put me there.

No memory of being CT scanned or X rayed repeatedly (hence the bill).

Not much memory of the day after.

Not much memory of the entire days transit back to the uk.

Headaches a year on.

When I bought a new lid, it had mips. No idea if it would have made a difference as I don't know how or why I crashed. I'd rather not repeat that experience!

That's not MIPS you are thinking of.  Thats the 'Kolroyd' that they use instead of EPS.

I did the boring version of that ^

Planned to take a leisurely evening road ride around Sandbanks and Poole Harbour

Don’t remember going for a ride

Don’t remember approaching two coppers for help as I couldn’t remember where I was going (turned out I didn’t know my name either 😀 )

Don’t remember the lifeboat crew sticking me on a spinal board

Don’t remember the ambulance ride

Maybe MIPS would have helped, maybe not, sometimes shit happens unfortunately

I have the endura mt500 helmet with koroyd or whatever it’s called. Imagine a million drinking straws stuck together then sliced into 2cm segments. Bits of this are used to fill all the vent holes in the helmet.
I had a pretty big off a few weeks ago. Head hit tree at wharncliffe. Outside of helmet has creases in the plastic, and a section of the drinking straws has a crease in it. I had a graze from the inside of the drinking straws scraping my bald forehead. I still have a stiff neck over a month later.
Was pretty dazed at the time but able to ride back to the car and then it was fine.
50% crash replacement scheme as well....
But... it’s a very hot helmet, and I think I’d prefer one without the honeycomb. I have a mips road helmet which is much cooler in the bonce. Undecided about whether to get like for like replacement or something else.

I just bought a new helmet for road, wasn't that bothered by MIPS, so just plumped for a Planet-X Carnac Podium..

https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/HECAPODSL/carnac-podium-sl-road-helmet

Pretty impressive helmet for under £30!
