... so what budget fun-o-frame should I bolt them into - ideas please, perhaps a rigid forks thing...

Ff29 was a brilliant ride I thought . They can be picked up relatively cheaply. I rode one rigid for 6 months and loved it.

what sort of riding is fun for you ?

It's not for me. I quite like the idea of building up a bike from spares then giving it away to charity / someone less fortunate who'd like to go mountain biking / racing but can't afford a bike to do so. The FF29 seems a good call to make both options a reality for someone.
