Grinding mud, salt, rain and other pestilence....
How is your only bike/winter bike holding up? 🙂
Ok, I think.
Dropper has a lot of play.
Swapped a chain and n/w chainring
2 slx levers started leaking - swapped for new m7000s
New headset bearings.
Not bad. Not been riding much though...
They're all huddled together under a nice warm cover. Refuse to go out if the weather's bad.
Full suss has not really been used but hardtail is feeling it a bit. Lack of maintenance is as much a factor as miles though. Chains and mechs seem more delicate when covered in mud than they used to.
"then this happened"
Your bike got so fed up of being a singlespeed that it self destructed on top of its own death shroud?
Tiger, that looks like a crime scene! Lol
Tripster commuter needs a strip down and clean, been going daily in all weathers on some right mucky roads, but I tend to clean it when I get home (a bit). It's here in the front room with me now.
MTB has a replacement BB waiting to be fitted tomorrow - Race Face innit - the cranks don't actually turn! Plus new bottom headset bearing as that's grungy too.
Been riding the hard tail less because got a new full suss. Im Im cleaning that regularly.
Hard tail is suffering a bit, think headset needs new bearings & should probably service the forks!
In one weekend i......
Bent the crank arm on the full susser E-mtb
Snapped the rear mech hanger on the normal full susser
Thought **** this ill go out on the road bike, 5 miles later two punctured tubs!!!!!
I bought a second hand (but pretty much new) hardtail at the end of October as I thought it'd be
A) more appropriate for some of the local trails, and
B) lower maintenance.
In that time, with maybe a couple of rides a week on it, it has:killed jockey wheels, both hubs, headset, bottom bracket, and pedal bearings, all due to crap sealing in a bike that's supposedly 'made for UK conditions' and no, I haven't jetwashed it, and yes, I've regularly serviced and regreased those parts.
It's worked out pretty expensive TBH!
Mtb is fine. Just cost me a few sets of brake pads.
Road bike is going to need new bar tape as it’s been on the turbo since Oct.
‘Gravel’/winter bike is feeling sad. Rear mech is sloppy, csbkesvall need doing, chain/cassette are pretty worn and I think the B.B. is starting to suffer. It’s had a hard few months though.
Sounds like your servicing has been poor if you've regularly serviced and regreased the parts and they still fail...you using the right grease?
The changing daylight hours meant that I saw my commuter in daylight for the first time in months the other day. Winter no. 5 has not been kind to it...
Sounds like your servicing has been poor if you’ve regularly serviced and regreased the parts and they still fail…you using the right grease?
Yup, Marine grease or Castrol LM, depending on application. Same as I've used for the past 20 odd years.
The issue is just crap parts with crap sealing. I've never had these issues on any other bike.
Same as it always does. Chain takes a bit of a battering and lower headset bearing needs some attention once a month as don't use mudguards. Riding a brakeless fixed gear certainly makes winter maintenance a lot easier...
This winter has killed the Finnish on my Dt 240hubs. But they are old and this is not there first winter.
Rear road rim needs replacing
Hopeful the rim will last till Easter then the bike will get a proper clean and rebuild ready for the summer inc rings cassette chain
Don't seem to get too much mud in the garage pumping out the miles on zwift, so the bikes coping well it seems.
Off road, the foul weather MTB is in bike hospital- new rear rim, new rear brakes- so for the last three weeks I have been riding my brand new 'nice' carbon hardtail in snow, ice, mud, wind, rain. Last Monday was so horrible I commuted to work on it rather than the road bike because I thought it would cope better with the icy bits.
On the road, the winter bike is about to go to bike hospital, having been abused solidly since September, while the nice road bike hasn't done anything since the end of October.
>Don’t seem to get too much mud in the garage pumping out the miles on zwift, so the bikes coping well it seems.

[Shudders] that sounds fun
Upper shock bushing have noticeable play, so lowers are probably goosed as well, so they need doing. will do the frame bearings at the same time (ordered them). the fork and shock could do with a strip/inspection/rebuild.
Full suss surviving the winter very well tucked away in the study and the HT has had some new headset bearings and is now hiding from the horror that is the South Downs in the shed. Road bike is covered in grime but so far holding up well.
Rigid fat bike has received and needed no maintenance. But to be honest up here in Scotland my skis have seen more action than my bikes this year.
Carbon fat bike is in rigid mode with a 1x setup and a Surly Bud up front. Not much to go wrong and even the reverb seems to have coped just fine. Out a couple of times a week in all weathers up here in North East Scotland.
I regularly clean and oil the drivetrain, then lube stanchions and brake pistons. Apart from that I can't see what the rest of the bike looks like under all the gloop.
Single speed fat bike with putoline on the chain.
So errrmmmm I lubed the chain sometime in December? Other than that it's not been fettled.
As far as washing goes it was hosed down sometime in January.
Trick is to upgrade stuff as it wears out, that way you end up with decent bearings where needed (Hope BB etc) and save money elsewhere.
[Edit] I killed my reverb after 6 years! So that's off for a service.
Ok. I cleaned and oiled the chain a few weeks ago which was long overdue as it had been on a few other bikes before this one but there's not much to go wrong on a SS HT 🙂 I think the boggo Shimano BB's been in a few other frames as well- there's a lot to be said for not cleaning your bike!
edit- I'm looking forward to when the weather starts to get a bit less awful, cos I've got some spanky new XT 10 speed gubbins to chuck on it-
It sounds like the bikes staying indoors are doing the best.Lol
I get that though! 🙂
Fitted a new bottom bracket to my Canyon dude this week, pads will most likely be next.
Will wait till the dryer weather comes to service the headset...😁
Should probably clean the Spitfire after Thursday's slop in Chopwell, but I hoyed a couple of buckets of water over it so that should do. Might bring it in the house. But I'd have to put the BFe in the garage (no hardship as it's actually clean
).
Pretty well. Last used 28th November. Finally got round to cleaning it this week. Have rebuild the front wheel with a rim to match the rear and fitted a new tyre. All ready for spring now.
Full suss has been used a few times, but the hardtail is the workhorse.
OK-ish. Nothing big (no major fork or wheel problems), but it feels a bit like it could be going a bit ‘Memphis Belle’. BB, cranks, headset all still good, though.
The bullet holes are adding up. The rear brake developed a sticking problem, turns out it was actually the lever. The chain has a stiff link somewhere. The right hand lock on is becoming a bit throttle-like. Rear derailleur is not 100%. Dropper has been a bit nightmare-ish in the cold.
It has been so wet that I’m not surprised, mind. The bike will get some TLC around spring equinox time hopefully.
Doing fine. But rigid and single Speed reduces maintenance somewhat. Crudguards seem to help a bit too.
Ss been left sitting on rear wheel upright after muddy slogfest for sometime so cranks have decided too no longer turn, cup and kone rear hub feeling a little unloved, ordered a XT bb from crc for £11:99 posted which I was more than happy with.
The rear bearings on my 10spd are feeling somewhat less spinny of late so more maintenance and a little expense for new bearings for that,no worries though all part of the fun though I guess.
My dropper has got contaminated and my chain is actually rusty! Easily sorted with a degrease....my fault as I used thin lube on the chain and then went on a boggy ride!
Rigid Ti - an inner cable. One set of pads. Clean every week. All good here. 1700 miles since october.
I'm not at my physucsl best and i'm being beasted by all the strava clan on zwift. That's disconcerting but I couldn't do it.
Both look good sat in they're racks since 25 Nov embarrassingly......I've no bike enthusiasm and appear to be a fair weather rider now, a crying shame really to see them sat there. 🙁
Have built up my old 26 soul as a beefy winter hardtail but the new full sus 29er has been so much fun to ride I have been dragging it out in the local mud and some Cannock sandy paste despite best intentions to shield it from the worst of winter. A recent bodge with some cheap muckynutz style mudguards is doing a pretty good job of keeping main pivots clear of muck and even the drivetrain seems less gritty as a result, but it was a bit late for the poorly though of raceface press fit BB92 bottom bracket....grindy as anything within 8 months of new. Despite conventional wisdom, did a clean-out/regress of the bearings in situ and they are sweet again...doddle to do as the external plastic seals are not as difficult to remove as the threaded race face bb's. Time to assess the toll on the rear suspension bearings now though....a first venture into rear suspension maintenance!
My headset/bb replacements do make me question the durability of the newer (ahem) standards.
My son has been using my 575 - Hope old-style headset (you know, bearing sat in press-in cup), HT2 Screw-in BB. These haven’t been touched since I was using the bike, 18 months- 2 years ago. He has been riding the same mucky conditions as me.
My RM has a BB92 press in (Cinch) and an integrated headset. Drop-in bearing garbage. They are 1yr old and about 5 months old, respectively and were both utterly borked - brown with rust and the driveside bb bearing didn’t even turn. Lower headset bearing the same, completely siezed. I know RF bbs weren’t renowned for longevity, but the amount of rides that has lasted is crazy compared to the Yeti. Headset even worse - Cane Creek 40, decent enough, but the bike is on it’s 2nd one already! My previous 575 had a RF headset that lasted 8 years and is still ok!
Just me? (maybe shoulda been a new thread?!)
Full suss last came out in November. It got washed, dried, autoglym waxed and chain lubed and is now in the bedroom till the clocks go forward. It will stay out till the clocks go back or later if Autumn is dry.
Hardtail will get used till clocks go forward then get serviced before a well earned rest.
Mustang got new chain, casette, gear cable and brake pads last weekend 🙁
Did the BB a month ago.
Still it’s a daily driver so gets a bit of work.
Rear wheel could do with truing but can’t be assed.
Road and Mtb’s tucked up or on turbo but probably start getting an airing soon.
Treated myself to a nice park repair stand and wow it’s made bike maintenance piece of p.
Set of pads each end, gear cable needs replacing. BB also has developed play. I have only done 220 miles, so not that impressed with the BB, but then it is Race Face...
I sold my old Giant Trance X and now have a Bfe built up with 26 wheels. Don’t miss the Giant yet, but it has been nothing but sloppy riding for months.
Ive only used my full sus three times over winter and the reverb had a fit the first time meaning a full bleed, The hardtail has been abused and I've paid the price the K's lev has given up the ghost, levels died and post returns slower than a method head to the job centre
Just been forced to fit another old 9sp drivetrain to the hardtail plus bb (again, used) and a rear hub service. Rear brake pads down to the metal but holding off replacing cos it involves parting with money. All this is the result of my "don't clean" experiment in January. Now having to use the fs in the filth till I can sort the ht
I bought a HT in October specifically for winter training, done 600km since then on it and I'm about 1/2 way through the front pads. Other than that it's just fine and dandy.
Surprisingly my track bike is ok and the new CX bike only has 140km (3 rides) on it so I doubt very much anything will need doing to that for a very long time.
FS hasn't seen the light of day since I got the HT, so that's a shiny and clean as when it went to bed in October.
I had a bit of a shock recently. Probably just nativity on my part, but I had assumed modern bikes were more durable, especially when you spend a small fortune on them.
Bird Aeris, just over 2 years old. I reckon I’ve only used it once every 3 weeks on average. To be fair, all I’ve done in that time is clean it superficially, and degrease/re-lube the drivetrain. But recently I took it to the bike shop for a rear shock service and brake service…and all this needed doing:
Shock service + new seals (as above)
Dropper post
Brake bleed + new pads (as above)
All new frame bearings (a couple were so worn and loose, that the rear triangle was bashing into the main frame, causing damage)
New bottom bracket + service (no free movement left, and grinding in use) – Raceface Cinch
Headset – Cane Creek 40 – service + new bearings. (again, next to no movement left and grinding in use
Rear hub service + new bearings – DT Swiss SD1501 (bearings completely shot)
Total with labour (because I’m the least practical man in Britain) – £450-£500 – remaining work being done tomorrow.
And I could easily have had more, less essential stuff done to it – new rear tyre, new rear headset, new chain, gear service etc.
It wouldn’t be so bad if it was being used several times a week etc, but it has only had occasional use over 2 years. As above, perhaps I am just naïve.
Surfing on the other hand – other than travel costs – simply involves a new £2 block of wax every few surfs, the occasional ding repair, and a new wetsuit every few years! 😉
Ha! Ninja edit.
Same as the rest of the year. properly maintained and lubed and nothing wearing out.
New bottom bracket + service (no free movement left, and grinding in use) – Raceface Cinch
Headset – Cane Creek 40 – service + new bearings. (again, next to no movement left and grinding in use
Seems to be a common theme. (Well between 2 of us anway!)
Very well indeed, neither bike has been ridden since October.
Meanwhile, I've been clocking up the hours in the local gym.
Yeah DezB - I did think that!
Oh, and I forgot to add Fork Service to the list too - Pike, lower leg service.
Everything seems to be holding up well so far but I'm only doing one 20 mile off road ride a week at the moment.
When Spring finally arrives it'll be time for a maintenance overhaul, drive-train refresh - new cassette, chainrings, chain and jockey wheels and a full bearing check too.
