I've been wanting to ride Snowdon for a while and now the voluntary ban is at an end would like to give it a go before the weather (really) turns. My usual riding buddies don't fancy at the moment, is anyone else considering it and fancies riding together? I'm pretty flexible on dates.

You know what, I've fancied that for many years. However, I now don't possess a tenth of the fitness required.

Good luck though.

+1

I'm sure I could get up there but I'm not sure I would have enough juice left to enjoy the descent.

IMO it wasn't half as tuff as I thought it was going to be.
If your going to do it try and go by the weather not a set date, also I'd go as early as possible to avoid the crowds.

I'm pretty flexible Bones, I guess a Sunday would be best and I'd prefer October time. Any particular time work for you?

I might be up for this! Been meaning to do Snowdon for a while! I assume we'd do the usual up llanberis path, down the Rangers route?

Why would you want too - great hill summer and winter but never seen the attraction on a mtb, spose there is a cafe at the top.

I have done it and it's great fun. I pushed most of the climb due to being unfit but going down the rangers was a hoot. I would love to do it again and really push it on the DH. Unfortunately I can't do October.

I'll see what response the 20th gets over breakfast, I'm off on a business trip on the 21st. If I get an ok let's do it.

I'd love to and I'm good for the 20th if there's room for one more? Reading the latest review of the route on Singletrack, I'd be expecting to push a bit on the way up and walk the odd section on the way down. As long as things are relaxed as there's no pressure not to do either, I reckon it'd be a great day out and one to tick off. Let me know

Practice carrying your bike on your back, it's quicker on the up where's it's very stoney/steep. Lots of it is cyclable though.

Will you be pushing down?
Do you have a time machine?
If you answer yes to both questions I think we may have finally solved it.

I'll be leaving from Chester if this helps?

Its looking like the 20th is viable for most people. Its not ideal for me, but I can make it work. Out of interest, would everyone also be OK with the 27th? This would accommodate the two people who can't make the 20th.

To get you in the mood The Rangers trail.
Start at llanberis and not the Ranger hostel to save a bit of pointless climbing.
If I was to do it again I'd go up and down the llanberis path.
When you get to the gate at the bottom of the ranger trail 2nd part of the video turn 90 degrees right and push up the grasses hill to pick up the telegraph trail back to llanberis.
Hope you get good weather.

I was hoping to do this ride through the week as i work most weekends and also race cross so the 20th is no good for me, unfortunately for me i am going to drop out but should anyone be free to go through the week rather than a weekend then let me know...Thanks

I am in the Lancashire area by the way and would prefer to car/van share... 🙂

I've done the rangers path on a Cotic BFe and it's fine if you're ok on steep rocky/technical stuff. You'd probably want big(ish) forks though.

I may well be up for this but won't know til closer the time. Either the 20th/27th should be ok.

I'm midlands (Northampton) and have (small) estate car, so could lift with someone if they are also from these parts 😉

It didnt seem to bother the chap on a Salsa Fargo that I passed back in May.

Been twice now, with work mates to walk it.
Both times in May.
Both times pee'd it down all the way up & all the way down.
Never again.
If you get a nice day I'd buy a lottery ticket too.

I'm good for either the 20th or the 27th. If it goes well on the 20th I might even consider doing the 27th as well! Darkside,
I'm also travelling from Chester!

The riding isnt the issue with Snowdon its the weather

I ridden it 4 times with various bikes including rigid the only difference is your speed

I've also been twice and called it off before even getting out of the car due to rain/wind - Its not fun on the top section if its windy although I've been up when it was snowing with no problem

If you get the right day its a brilliant ride

not sure you need to be any fitter Grum as most mortals will walk large sections anyway- I dont recall it being as hard as Skiddaw up the zig zags though it was a while agoe so I amy have just blocked it out.
you can ride it on anything though a FS would be my choice.
I agree weather is the issue as big winds means I am oot

Why is it that walkers get the best weather/time of year and cyclists have to work round them? Doesn't seem right does it.

Yes, seems logical to me considering pedestrians have right of way on bridleways.
"Cyclists using a bridleway are also obliged to give way to other users on foot or horseback."

We get ample time to ride it. I wouldn't want to ride it during busy times.
I'm tempted to join you but i prefer to go real early during the summer months.

yes hora we should indeed be charging down the bridleway when it is heaving with walkers ...what could possibly go wrong?

IIRC it was causing real problems and the issue was a threat if a FULL ban so a voluntary agreement was reached so they could walk safely and we could ride it a bit faster and equally safely.

It looks like there is interest for both dates then. I really am going to struggle for the 20th, so I'd rather aim for the 27th so I can start planning. I am happy to do the logistics for the 27th, someone else will have to take up the mantle for the ride on the 20th. If you wanted to do the 27th Johnny, we can car share if you are interested. I'm happy to drive.

Actually I guess it works better like maxtorque did it, and people could copy and paste it and add themselves, so:

20th

maxtorque, Northampton

27th

Grum, Hebden Bridge, room for 2 more
Dark Side, Chester, room for 2 more

Day or half day at Antur Stiniog on the 26th sounds good. 🙂

If you've got anything dual ply hanging around I'd stick it on for the day. You're not going to win any records on the way up anyway and you seem to pick up speed so easily on the ranger path it's easy to pinch. Not done it tubeless mind.

I used a Spesh purgatory tubeless on the back and got a split, would use dual ply roller/minion next time so I can go faster 🙂

no one punctured when we did and i neither asked nor noticed what tyres folk had
I doubt dual ply is required but if you have it it might be with bothering
