A few years ago, when I was a little lad my Dad took me over or should i say down Crib Goch. We ascended the Pyg track and as the weather was good descended Crib Goch which was a bit, emotional at the time, but I've now done higher graded scrambles such as the cuillin ridge, which have probably tamed Crib Goch a lot.

However i'm looking at going up to Lanberis next weekend and weather permitting going over CG. Given the weather is descent do you think its a possibility? Any news on conditions, snow or anything on the top? Also is Crib Goch a harder ascent than descent?

Oh and if anybody doesn't believe I did it at 11, i'm happy to uplaod photographic evidence! Haha

Cheers Guys

Lewis

Crib Goch I would say is harder down than up personally. I've done it a few times either way and it's not really too bad either way. We took a bunch of cadets over it not long back and they all made it 🙂

As far as weather goes, anyone who has been there longer than a couple of hours will know that the weather can change very quickly and normally for the worse. Be prepared for poor visibility and poor conditions even if it's sunny when you set out!

Also don't forget torches etc as getting stuck on crib goch in the dark ain't fun!

Oh That doesn't sound too bad! Yeah thanks for the advice! Might have a crack then, should the weather turn bad when we start i suspect we'll just take the pyg or miners track

Crib Goch is more fun done as an ascent, IMO. For a cracking mountain day, try the Snowdon Horseshoe route - from Pen-y-Pas up to Snowdon summit via CG, start to descent via the Watkin path, then trend left, staying close to the edge for some more nice (grade 1) scrambling over Lliwedd, then back down to the lake and follow the motorway back to Pen-y-Pas.

Alternatively, try Tryfan via the North ridge, starting from Milestone Butress, then up Bristly Ridge (lovely gully scramble, possibly a little more technical than CG, but no exposure), across the Glyders and back to Ogwen cottage down past the Devil's Kitchen and into Cwm Idwal.

The latter is far safer if it's a particularly windy day, but both great fun. I'd say allow yourself 5-6 hours for either route. Very much doubt there is any snow up there.Try this link for useful webcams - T http://www.ogwen-rescue.org.uk/oggi_cam/

Today we got 3/4 of the way up from Llanberis, got to the last point where the railway crosses the path before the summit, the last 500m we carried the bikes on our backs, we met a couple coming down who had come down after turning back due to high winds, they advised us not to proceed.
The down hill was worth it with only 5 punctures out 10 riders, roll on next spring for the next attempt.

Last Saturday you couldn't even stand due to the strength of the gales on one of the southwest ridges on the way up to Snowdon (Moel Eilio ridge). Got to 700m and decided to descend.

I certainly wouldn't recommend you do Crib Goch or Tryfan in those conditions. Keep an eye on the forecast, and if strong winds are likely consider what escape / quick descent options you would have if you go out.

Obviously leave the bikes behind 😉 Probably catch the train down to Lanberis from Lincolnshire! and start from there. Hopefully the weather can pick up and we can have a crack at this snowdon horseshoe, i've never done any scrambling in snow though! (Although im desperate to go snowholing if anybody knows a good company to go with?)

be very careful with the weather at the moment. CG is not funny in wind. Unless you want a lift from Prince William!
Check MWIS and call Joe Brown's in Capel before you leave and get some local advice.
+ it's much nicer day out on a dry, sunny day
