Had a fall riding today and I've snapped a nail 80% of the way across right at the base.

Google not much use as I don't wear false nails.

I realise I'm probably just going to wait for a new nail to grow but there's a gap between the bits and it's a bit sore - is there anything I should do in the short term?

This thread is useless without pictures.

Also, superglue.

I would use superglue, but would hesitate to reccommend it to others, just because its hard to be sure over the internet!

As the new nail grows, it will continue to push the old one off. Give it time and it will either get pushed off or just fall off.

I completely lost a nail a couple of months ago. After a week or so the nail bed toughens up and doesn't hurt. It took about 4 weeks for the nail to grow back to where it's visible and it's now about half grown back.

I'd just leave it, it'll sort itself out.

Hack it off at the elbow with a rusty bowsaw.

Scream in pain and then super glue the nail back on to protect the rawness exposed. Ouch i feel for you.

I jammed my thumb between a couple of rocks maybe last June (ish), it went black, covering most of the nail, was either blood or bruised, but that healed itself in a couple of months because of the new nail pushing the old stuff off. I also picked at the black bit so had a bit of a hole, when it came near to end of my nail/thumb it had a bit of a step in it, still does now. Yours will be fine as long as you don't do anything to make it worse

A mate of mine who is a mechanic trapped his thumb on a lifting ramp and the nail went totally black and his thumb swelled up. The nurse at the hospital got a paper clip red hot and pushed it thru his nail to relieve the pressure and was sprayed with blood as the paper clip went thru.
As for op I would superglue it and put some nail varnish on it cos I know as it started to grow out I would pick and gnaw it!!!.

Super glue to start with (did something similar last week only up the nail not across it. Currently using clear nail varnish on it as the glue is a bit to inflexible

I use a bit of duct tape on this kinda injury for day-to-day protection - really just so it doesn't catch on something and pull it the wrong way (which it will).

😯

This description might not work in narrative 🙄 , but ... cut the tape into an H shape, fold the inside bits of the H in on themselves, so the stickiness is covered by tape, and put that bit over the injury - use the unfolded 'arms' of the H shape to stick to the rest of your finger - this'll save the tape ripping the damaged bit nail when you change the tape. Other than that it'll sort itself out (eventually).

Have a look online for 'field-expedient duct tape dressing' or some kinda variation on that. You can reliably hold all sorts of injuries together like this.

Had a split toe nail, put a temp repair on it using a piece of an empty unused tea bag, varnished to the bed of the nail. Seems to have worked.

Your accident has bugger all to bond to by the looks, best of luck with how to build up the repair

twinings English breakfast if you were wondering
