As above - I have a 10 speed XT mech (warranty replacement)- will this work with 9 speed chain and shifter?

I'm not an expert but I thought that 10 speed MTB shifters pulled a different amount of cable than 9 speed ones (Shimano).
So no, it won't work. But I could be totally wrong about this.

You can make it work by swapping to a SRAM shifter and adding a spacer to the mech to correct the cable pull. But that's a big of a faff.
