Found this quite interesting. It is from the perspective of a motorcyclist but is relevant to the road cyclist too.
Good that is.
Thats good. The other thing I have seen stated is about the "threat" visibility Big things are a threat, small ones are not. I read that its when an object covers 7 degrees of vision it becomes a threat and is noticed. For a cycle this is when you are only a few tens of feet away.
Thing is... that's the academic science behind it, reasons why sometimes things are missed and accidents happen. Not always the actual reasons are those feature in the video (eg. mostly, I think (no scientific research involved, just experience!) people are just not looking), but there's also a reality. A place where motorists are looking out for other things, other movements on the road. Ensuring they don't splatter everything that isn't the same as them. If there wasn't... WE'D ALL BE SCREWED.
This is useful and I assume similar in concept.

As a motorcyclist it helped me understand how to minimise Smidsy and I've adapted my motorbike with the addition of LEDs to the back of the wingmirrors to increase the visible width of the bike in low light. Im certain it has helped my visibility.
