Just remove the foam pads and throw them in the wash with the rest of your riding gear. I do mine every few rides and my helmet smells fine.

As above, pads in a zip up pocket in your shorts (otherwise they migrate to far flung corners of your washing machine or get spat into the seal where all the gunk and pubes gather) and chuck them in the machine, I take the helmet into the shower with me and use the shower gel lather from washing my hair to do the straps. It is now a habit and my lid never smells and hasn't deteriorated.

If all this is a hassle, you can buy small aerosols of helmet sanitiser from motorcycle accessory shops.

Wash with baby shampoo in the sink or bath. That's the motorbike method but works fine for pushbikes. You can remove the pads but I find I never get them back quite right.

Do not do what my sister-in-law did. Noticing that the slightly sweaty smell in the cupboard was due to a ripe 661 full face, she attacked it with the Febreze.

Cue next ride. Brother-in-law is ripping down one of the many trails on Mt. Seymour when suddenly sweet-smelling but decidedly toxic sweat leached from the helmet lining and into his eyes. Not good...

I just sling mine in the sink with a little fairy liquid after every ride, swish it about, stick on draining board, all dry and fresh next day. Used to put the pads in the wash but led to early falling apart of the fabric (Xen)

I use the Motorex spray, I used to remove pads to wash them, but as above could never seem to get them back in the same way!
