All,

sorry for the extended dumb questions - im an andriod user and i have viewranger on it with all my favourite areas with 1:25000 os maps and also some maps for the alps.

i used to think i wanted a casio WSD F20/20a/F30 (not sure what the differences are) however apparently viewranger is no more, even though it still seems to work on my phone for now.

we like going out in new places and exploring and i'd like to be able to glance at my watch to confirm im on the right track, rather than having to take my phone out of my pack constantly. i end up wedging it into a pocket because i can't be bothered and eventually im going to lose or break it.

are there any other options for os maps on a smart phone or is the casio it? Garmin perhaps? And would this mean i have to throw away my viewranger maps and start again?

i do have an old garmin, with os maps on it, which is ok but bloody infuriating to use, have they got any better recently its at least 5 years old.

There are quite a few smart watches that work with viewranger. I've got a very cheap one and it works ok. It was a bit too fiddly for me so I rarely used it but it did work. Nice OS map with me in the middle. Not sure what will happen with viewranger but I suspect other apps will have similar functions. I've got a Garmin too and the maps on that are significantly worse. It's an older one though, I believe the fenix 6 is pretty good but that is super pricey.

OS maps on a smart phone? I just use the official OS maps app. Smart watch>? The mapping on the Garmin fenix 6 Pro series is incredible. Not found a footpath that doesn't show on the watch yet - really very very good. The larger size of the 6X Pro is useful. The UI is OK - soon get used to it to be honest.

Given the current trend is to mount expensive smartphones to handlebars to do this, is there not a wrist mount that will allow you to do the same with your phone on your wrist? Saves getting it out the bag and also saves using a dedicated tool that will provide more accuracy... 😉

What about the Suunto 7 smart watch? It's a fitness watch, running on WearOS so will work well with your phone and has mapping build in. Can also download offline maps too.
