I might want one. It would have to be direct drive, for starters, and need to be Zwift compatible as my mate wants to be raced. I know nothing about this concept though.

As I understand it, the better smart trainers vary their resistance so when you get to the steep bit of the Tourmalet or whatever it gets harder. Some measure power too. If I don't have a bike computer than measures power, does that matter? Will it still be displayed and recorded on Swift or whatever?

Any good deals around? Am I daydreaming if I think I can get such a device for £500?

Look at reconditioned models direct from Wahoo.

I bought a kickr for £650, they do a kickr core for £500

Dcrainmaker for reviews.

I was set on a tacx flux s, but then heard that garmin cut off support to out of warranty machines when a firmware update borked their machines.

Turbo power meter will record on Zwift, RGT, Trainer road etc.

~£500 could definitely cover a direct drive, not a super fancy one like a Neo 2, but a modest Tacx or Elite model etc.

Zwift max gradient is ~21% very briefly (~1sec) on Harrogate, sustained section might be ~17% up the Radio Tower climb.

I bought a Elite Directo last month for £500. There was a new model out so it was heavily discounted. It’s £549 now https://www.sprocketscycles.com/elite-direto-x-direct-drive-fe-c-mag-trainer?gclid=Cj0KCQjw9tbzBRDVARIsAMBplx-oHBFDjkR9N1l6j7CJAGTDMwPxosgS5Wwy0RcMGAf9g4thxOLJ8U4aArmAEALw_wcB

Power and cadence (ish) are measured.  Works perfectly with Zwift. Yes resistance changes as the gradient increases/decreases. ERG if you want to do structured training.  Flux S probably a similar price but I had a very band experience with mine. All three of ‘em 😉

There’s a cheaper Elite I think as well, still direct drive but not sure the differences to the one I have.

I’ve put about 500km on the Directo (same as the link above) and so far it’s been faultless. Pretty quiet as well.

Second hand Elite Direto on EBay or FB marketplace, should be around £400 if you can find them

I have just got an Elite Zumo from Halfords, cheapest direct drive smart trainer I could find with bolt through axle capability.

Just picked up an Elite Zumo for the impending lockdown.

Annoyingly my arkose is away for warranty work, but it will work with the bolt thru on my mtb.

Evans were doing the Saris H3 for about £630

Serious piece of kit

Annoyingly had to add a lead to convert the power supply to UK, but otherwise great
