I've got 2.8 Maxxis Ikons + on mine, ( from nextdaytyres) 20 miles old if you want them.
I should have hit the Rekon + option...

I've just taken a punt on a pair of Maxxis Shorty 29 x 2.5WT to go on Velocity Duallys to replace Chronicles. Not put them on yet but can report back next week.

reason i was asking, on yesterdays ride the first couple of miles were on proper claggy leaf mulch type mud. rear tyre was worse than useless.
tyre/chain.chainring are very close to each other. mud picked up on tyre, rubbing off directly on chain caused a nightmare.

however once off the clag, the rest of the ride on harder surfaces was perfect.

I've had a 26in surly DW 2.75 on a Hugo. Also had it on a crest, and it came up barely any bigger than a 2.4 conti x king. Back the other way, I've seen Biff's Jones with 2.4 x kings on duallies and they looked great. And I'm sure he wouldn't be riding something that didn't work.

So anything 2.4 and up could work, probably more about construction and tax than stated width - what shape the tyre ends up whether it ends up too square and whether the tread still works at that shape.

DIrt wizard comes up smaller and having tested it today in proper crappy claggy clay I can say it clears well. My Rooster has even less clearnce than your jones. It'll be in the north this week if you want to take a look.
