I have discovered the joys of going bareback. I've ditched my camelbak and love the freedom and marginally less sweaty back.  My bike has bottle mount under the downtime and I don't fancy a mouth full of horse poo when I want a drink.

I like the idea of dressing like a Russian Ultra and donning a bum bag. I want the smallest one I can get with a hydration reservoir it's for shorter rides so a litre should see me through.

Any recommendations for the most minimal but comfortable bag that won't bounce around and be annoying?

I just got the 5L Dakine hot lap. Has a 2L bladder and holds just enough gear.

Cheaper than the others like Evoc or Camelbak.

I recently got one of those Evoc bum bags in the PSA posted on here.

It's bloody great....

Anyway, bum bags are very now darling.

I have proof!

I have -  https://www.bikeradar.com/mtb/gear/category/accessories/luggage/waist-bag/product/mavic-crossride-belt-review-50823/

You'd never know you're wearing it, it's brilliant, but as a compromise storage space is on the small side. Can fit tools and a bar or two of spare food and a bottle for a circa 2-3hr ride on a not so hot day.

I strap a spare tyre to frame, put food in my short pockets and fill this up with tools, phone and a bottle.

For longer rides I have a Camelbak repack LR -  https://www.bikeradar.com/mtb/gear/category/accessories/luggage/hydration-pack/product/camelback-repack-lr-fanny-pack-hip-pack-bum-bag-51628/

Much more space for gear and a 1.5L hydration pouch, a really good bag for longer rides/hot days. It fits well but you can notice it bounce around a bit more compared to the mavic crossride belt when it's loaded up. It'd be hard to stop that though, so its swings and roundabouts.

Since I got these I've not used a rucksack type bag in over 6 months and loving it.

I went through this a couple of months and ended up using a Bontrager rapid pack and find it fantastic.

I have 4 different bumbags but none are great when (weighty  carrying water, but/so I use a bottle when using them. When I need to carry a bit more or its particularly muddy or covered in horse poo out I use the new Wingnut 1.8 which is great. Holds a good amount of water and 'stuff' and stays low out of the way and stable and doesn't get sweaty or squeeze your bladder like a bumbag.

I have the Source Hipster which is 1.5 litres (bladder), Very minimal in extra cargo space - 3 small external pockets on the bag and 2 mesh pockets on the belt. Not really any good if you want to carry a spare top but not as bulky as some.
