[Closed] Small amount of sealant on disc rotor

For the first time, yesterday I tried to set my TCS wheel/tyre combo up tubeless.

I expected to be there most of the day, but using some cheapish rim tape from CRC (I wanted Peaty's but it was sold out). With Muc-Off sealant and valves, I was able to get the tyre seated first time around and then removed the core and added the sealant.

Couldn't believe my success—first attempt and with a cheapo track pump. I'd recommend Hope Tech Enduro and WTB Ranger combo.

I only went and put the tyre on the wrong way around!!

I've removed the tyre today; emptied the sloshing sealant in the tyre and cleaned both that and the wheel with washing up liquid and warm water. Removed the tape and they're drying now so I'll start afresh later/tomorrow.

I noticed during this I got some sealant on the disc rotor. It was wet still, and I rinsed it off right away.

Could this have damaged/contaminated my rotor? Shame if it has as it's also a brand new Hope rotor.

Sealant is usually basically latex and ammonia. It’s unlikely to have anything in it to contaminate a rotor. IMO, you’d be more likely to do that yourself if you used a used washing up implement on the rotor while cleaning the spill...

vincienup I just rinsed it off. I was only using a sponge and washing up liquid anyway so I don't expect that would have harmed it. I'll spray some disc brake cleaner on it when I'm finally done.

Washing up liquid is fine, I was meaning more if the washing up sponge had anything oily/greasy in it (if it’s been used for washing up this is likely).

If you’re going to blast the rotors with brake cleaner then you can stop worrying but make sure you do that outdoors. That stuff is not something you want a lungful of!

Why did you not just carefully turn the tyre round? Seems a bit overkill to remove all the sealant then clean it all. Also you say you’ve removed the rim tape. Why?

Tubeless is not a precision system, it's a load of slop in a tyre that leaks out to block up the gaps and the sealant takes a while to go off, it's not degrading as soon as it leaves the bottle. Obviously it's a bit late now but you don't need to be so surgical next time 🙂 good luck

antares I did just turn the tyre yesterday, but I must have damaged/lifted the tape (the fit between the tyre and rim is very, very snug) or perhaps even put the valve in too tight (I tightened it when I turned the tyre—thought it would make a better seal).

Upshot is that it was leaking air badly through the nipple holes so air must have been leaking into the cavity. it was completely deflated this morning so I thought I'd just start afresh.

If it's a generic disc brake cleaner for cars then they often contain a light oil. Typically most people learn this the hard way.

Just go flat out down a steep hill and brake hard at the bottom.

You will die. Immediately. A horrible and quick death. Best to destroy the bike right now.

At least you won't suffer a disc rotor puncture now. 😉

Do yourself a favour and put a tubed tyre on overnight after you've retaped the rim - presses the tape down nice and tight and should prevent the same thing again (IMO)
