I'm wanting a bit more volume on my bike (fully rigid thing), so looking to go 29+ at the front.

Problem is I only have a 30mm internal width rim, and just over 90mm tyre clearance in the forks, so 3.0" would be a bit bigger than ideal and I'd be better off with a 2.8".

But unlike 650b+ it seems 29+ tyres are pretty much all 3.0".

So, what 29x3.0" tyres come up a bit small?

So far, the options seem to be:

Terrene Mcfly, an actual 2.8" (can't find them anywhere)
Panaracer Fat Nimble (waaayyy too light and fragile)
Teravail something (again difficult to find, Bikemonger has them but only light tanwall ones, and expensive...)
Surly Dirt Wizard (more like 2.8" apparently)

So is there anything else worth looking at?

I have less clearance on my forks but manage to run a Chronicle on a 40mm rim.

Maybe try looking for a big 2.6"?

Had a Terrene McFly Hard version out back on the tandem for over a year but switched out now, was lucky and got one of the first batch brought over by a US relative on a visit was great tyre but does come up a bit narrow than the stated width.

Now running a Vittoria Mezcal 2.6 which comes up as big if not slightly bigger than the McFly, cant fault it so far for where we ride (quite sand based) but potentially not the greatest ever front tyre.

Maybe try looking for a big 2.6″?

That was my other thought... but does it exist?! Most are undersized as far as I know

I'm running Chronicles on Velocity P35s - about 72mm - plenty of clearance IMO.

Ah, well as it happens I picked up a couple of secondhand Chronicle's to try them out. Good that they may be ok on a 30mm rim.

Now running a Vittoria Mezcal 2.6 which comes up as big if not slightly bigger than the McFly

That's quite tempting though... Do you have a measurement of the Mezcal by any chance? If it's oversized that could be a good shout, if the Chronicles don't work out.

Thanks 🙂

I'm running P35/Chupacabra 29x3 combo OK on Salsa Cromoto Grande forks.

No issues whatsoever.

Romek

Cheers!
I.

Panaracer Fat B Nimble was more of a 2.8" tyre (68mm wide on the 28mm rim), similar to the Dirt Wizard (72mm on the 28mm rim).

Nobby Nic in 2.6 is pretty big, do they do that in 29?

29x3” Knard runs with plenty of clearance in a Niner steel fork.
If your near the Midlands you welcome to borrow it.
2.8 Trailblazer is quite compact, not sure if they do 29” version though.

Thanks for that bugpd, that sounds a pretty decent volume for a 2.6". The Mezcal is the only one not undersized in that review that Andy linked.

I actually have a 2.6 Nobby Nic on there at the moment, so a Mezcal would be a little bigger, but probably not enough of a volume increase to make it worth replacing before it's worn out.

I'm in Leeds actually, but thanks a lot for the offer 🙂 A Trailblazer would certainly fit, but no 29er unfortunately

Rocket Ron in either 2.8 or 2.6 have been great for me. I've tried others and they don't have the feel or are too heavy.

New range, as confusing as ever but I went for the blue line addix iirc.

Doesn't look like they do it in 29 bigger then 2.25.

I'm sure they did.
