Just fitting my new brake and the lever has a bit on it that hits the grip.
This stops me getting the shifters close enough for easy gear changes.
Even if I file the lump off, the reservoir will be over the grips.
I've got an old lever so can put that on but I can't see that this is how it's meant to be.

Move the shifter in board of the lever and the brake more towards the center of your bars.
The "lump" is to stop the levers flexing so much on the bars.
You might find the brakes will feel better too with the hook of the lever lining up with your index finger.
I’ve had to compromise on this before. In the end went with better /optimum braking lever position (further inboard) rather than the shifter being ideal. I take it the shifter doesn’t have any adjustment further outboard?
If you file the “lump” off I’d imagine the lever will flex as it’s there to support it. They’re designed to work with a shifter mounted to the brake lever. There are loads of adapters available these days, but you’re stuffed if you’ve got a clamp on shifter
Think I'll just put the old lever on.
Don't the SLX levers have an ispec connector to get the shifter in the right place? Assuming the shifter fits ispec obviously.
If it's a band-on shifter, fit that first then fit the brake lever. It's a little bit fiddly but easy enough to do.
If you position the brake lever for efficient one finger braking the shifter will be positioned ok as well. This is mine:

I've got the gear position window on my shifter....and I like it.
As per Dove1 (on the commuter), but I had to replace the gear indicator window with the blank plate (just hadn't got round to it until I needed to do it, wouldn't put me off using the new lever).
This extra bit that comes back to the bar is annoying. A slightly beefier single clamp would eliminate any supposed flex and allow for more bar furniture. But, really, we all know that it is a design which has the intent of limiting the rider's ability to run gears from other manufacturers.
And who the heck pulls hydraulic disc brake levers hard enough to feel flex in the clamping bit?
I’ve got the gear position window on my shifter
oh.. well… you’ve made that bed…
And who the heck pulls hydraulic disc brake levers hard enough to feel flex in the clamping bit?
The clamp is further inboard than in previous models, so assume it needs the support. Why they bothered moving it is the bigger question
I’ve got the gear position window on my shifter
That then is the choice you've got.
Gear window or better placement of various levers?
Why they bothered moving it is the bigger question
It's not really, though, is it?
It is to preclude using as many other brands' bar-band shifters as possible.
But hey - for sheer ability to chop and change parts of the system with reasonable economy, Shimano are the boss.
Not so good for landfill, mind.
So OP wants four fingered braking 😱
🤣
So OP wants four fingered braking
Or one thumb pushing the bar onto the lever...
Flex in a brake lever might not be discernable but it's a big part of how powerful a brake is.
To get it all to fit I'd suggest the OP moves their gear shifter into the 21st century and ditches the window. If the gear you're in is too hard, change down. If it's too easy, change up.
Gear indicator windows?
Arent they from the late 2000s?
Fantastic things - if you take your eyes off the trail and look down, you can get an approximate indication of what gear you are in.
🤣🤣🤣
If you have got a compatible band on shifter or you convert a compatible shifter to band on there is this adapter:
