Quick query.....
Been out and fitted a nice shiney hope bashguard to my slx crankset tonight, while everything was off I had a good look at everything before putting it back together, one thing I noticed was the teeth of the middle ring are not inline all the way round, it seems to buckle inwards in a couple of places, can't see how this can be damage as its quite consistant, so assume its for picking the chain up when shifting.....
but.... the chain is now not engaging with the teeth very well, riding along the top of then ad dropping to the smaller ring when it gets to the two inwards bent sections.
So two questions really:
Is my middle ring stuffed?
or
Is my chain stretched and middle ring fine?
did you take the cranks out? If so I would suspect you have not put them back in far enough - give the drive side a good tap with a rubber mallet (or a block of wood). When you replace the plastic pre-load bolt make sure it is finger tight.
The teeth sound fine.
Also it is a good idea to measure your chain. Check Sheldon Browns site for how to measure without any special tools.
Chainline was one thing I considered, but after a number of hefty strikes with a hammer it is definately right in tight....
Riding in the morning, will check the chain length tomorrow, but reacon its done well over a thousand miles, most of it in the middle ring, which seems strange that now it won't sync.
You've not refitted the chainring the wrong way round have you? The ramps/pins trying to drop th echain now rather than hold onto the chain?
Don't think I removed the middle ring, just gave it a good clean, so don't think I could have reversed it.

If the bashguard replaces the big/outer ring then you must of removed the middle ring too. Assuming you took the cranks off as you said above, then you could of fitted it back the wrong way round??
😀
Didn't need to take it off as middle mounts to the inside of the spider and bash to the outside.....
Tried to keep it all together to make sure everything went back in the right place!
