Assuming it's an 11-36 you'll need a 10 speed MTB rear mech, but then it'll work just fine!

Careful. I tried to use a road 10 spd rear mech with a 10 spd MTB cassette and couldn't ever get the thing to index properly. So you will need to get a MTB mech (aside from the need to have a longer cage to manage the 36t).

Took my bike with this problem to my LBS (whom I trust - Psyclewerx) and they agreed and confirmed that 10spd Shimano road mechs won't work with 10spd MTB Shimano stuff - they've also had awful problems trying to index road vs mtb.

This is SRAM.

On rear mechs there are 4 pull ratios:

- Shimano 10 speed road and 9 speed MTB
- Shimano 10 speed MTB
- SRAM 9 speed MTB
- SRAM 10 Road and MTB

You can't mix and match from within those. So you could use a 9 speed MTB mech with 10 speed road STIs. The only potential issue is that Shimano use a 1mm spacer on their 10 speed road cassettes, which they don't on their MTB cassettes, I'm not sure if the sprockets are offset, or if the cassette is 1mm wider, but I'm not aware of that having caused anyone problems.

David Millar was using an XX 11-36 cassette and rear mech with Red shifters at the Vuelta.

The CTC mag,s technical questions page a month or two back recommended the following...........

If you want to lower the gearing on a 10 speed shimano road system, you need to use a 9 speed long cage shimano mtb rear mech with a SRAM 10 speed MTB cassette (they said 11/36 but as shimano mega 9 rear mechs only ever dealt with 11/34 max I think I'd settle for 11/34)and a shimano road 10 speed chain.
They (probably Mr Juden) are saying this definately works.

I haven't tried it yet...I was going to phone SRAM tech first to consult, but haven't bothered as I'm not really gelling with my experimentation into the world of drop bar road bikes and was thinking of selling the bike.

I have tried a TA (shimano Road 10 spd) 26 tooth chain ring on a Shimano 105 10 speed triple set up and it worked ok...if you could combine that with an 11/34 cassette you'd have a usable low gear for lakeland passes. A mate even runs a 22 tooth and says it works, but I'm not certain if that is on a 10 speed system or an older 9 speed, and his definition of working might not be as purist as mine!

I can confirm that 10 speed shimano mtb stuff is NOT compatible in any/way/shape/form with shimano 10 speed road stuff....so don't go there folks.

9 speed Shadow mechs will cope with a 36t sprocket just fine - they did the 12-36 SLX cassette. The only potential issue as I said is the width of the cassette, which may cause issues in some instances. I know of people who have done it though without issue. SRAM ones shouldn't have the same problems.

I'm not sure about the relevence of your comments on ring sizes, you can fit anything you want, including an MTB chainset if you want a 22. Ring spacing is standard, so as long as you have an appropriate front mech (this does discount all of the latest generation of STIs bar 105 5703s as they all have a unique front mech pull and 6700 and 7900 aren't available in triple), that'll work fine.

I'm guessing (probably wrongly) that this is for 1x10 on a cross bike.
