Thought my rear gear cable was past its best but after taking it all to bits, lubing and refitting it appears to be the rear mech. Tried to free off the rear mech with penetrating oil and moving it back and forth but its very reluctant to down shift.

Any ideas or prior experience?

I've had front mechs do this in the past but they've always come good. This is my first SRAM rear mech and I was quite impressed with the last 6 months service.

not an x9 is it ? 2010 models had a problem with not dropping onto the smallest cog.

Take it back to the shop, you probably won't be the first they've seen. Common problem.
