Hi there,
Just got back from a 2hr ride and my seatpost has dropped about 1cm.
Its an alloy post in a steel frame and the seatclamp tightened to 4NM.
Is there anything I'm doing wrong? I thought 4NM would be enough as I
don't want to damage the frame.
Any advice would be appreciated!
Cheers
Thomson post? Notoriously undersized.
Generally carbon assembly paste reduces need for over tightening clamp.
Yep, Carbon paste is your friend!
No, its a standard genesis post in a genesis frame, has a similar
polished finish to the thomson one. I've just changed the clamp from
Q/R to a simple hope bolt. Maybe more torque?
Carbon paste would be my first try
Think I may pop down to Evans and get some paste!
Looks like it'll do the trick. Cheers.
Had exactly the same problem with the standard post in my P7.
Changed clamp to Hope which helped but I still had to tighten the sh&t out of it to stop it moving eventually.
Recently changed post for an aftermarket one of the same diameter...now bomb-proof with clamp done up normally.
I guess post diameters vary even though they are meant to be specific sizes.
I had a problem with slipping posts with multiple hope clamps, got a salsa one worked a treat. The bolt on the salsa is much closer to the post. One the hope the tabs bend rather than draw it together, this is probably only noticeable if there's slackness elsewhere though. But worked for me.
+1 for Salsa, always fixed this problem when I've had it.

Make sure all parts are cleaned and lightly greased. This makes sure the torque is not wasted overcoming friction on the bolt and nut surfaces. This is particularly important when using quick release clamps. Grit in the cam can make it seem impossibly tight with the post still not gripped.

0.1mm shim is your friend. Drinks cans are about this, but don't last if you take the post out often.
Hope QR and Thomson post here. Sliptastic!
Might give carbon paste a go, although I heard chalk or toothpaste would work too
found carbon paste creaks, I had a hope clamp which slipped at 7nm with my ks so I canged to a thomson clamp which stays put at 4nm.

Thats the most sense I have seen on here for ages.
Regarding the salsa clamp, would that be the lip-lock version?
Cheers
I had slipping on the 29.8 dia on my On-One with a 30.0 Hope clamp.
So there was no way it was going to work with the 29.6 dia on my Niner.
A 30.0 Salsa Flip-Lock does though.
Have to point out that using grease caused my post to slip.
Degreased and cleaned it by shoving a cloth right down the seat tube and twisting to thoroughly clean the full insertion distance of the seat tube and the slipping problem disappeared.
Hope clamp with a Thomson post in Turner frame here. No slipping at all.
I have had problems with my recent purchase. Hope clamp on a Easton Haven post (ali frame). ALl new & clean and I keep tightrning more & more. Is 4nm sufficient?
Hope clamp on all my bikes with Thomson posts and no slippage (2 aluminium and one carbon frame).
As above - strip and clean the clamp mechanism and lightly grease or apply some dry lube if it's dusty and you change the post height lots. Also stops you rubbing the annodising off your seat clamp.
Remove as much old grease from the frame and post as you can and use a very light smear of anti-seize or the gritty assembly paste - you only want a very thin layer or you will gouge and scratch your post.
Bit late, but would one of THESE work ?
