I’ve been asked to try and sort a problem on a on one whippet ( guy says it’s around 10yrs old).

I believe the freehub is slipping as when applying pressure ( peddling uphill etc) the cassette spins and when tightening the lockring on the cassette the cassette doesn’t get tight but turns forward. I’ve stripped and cleaned the freehub but no joy although it all looks ok and not much mileage. I’ve no idea what type it is as the hubs are on one branded, is the freehub knackered or am I missing something? Does any one know what hubs/ freehub were used on the whippet sram x9 build, 26 inch wheel so I could try and get spares? Cheers

If you can't tighten the cassette it seems the free hub still isn't working after you've cleaned it. Have you degreased and re-lubricated the pawls? Do they appear to work when you press them? What have you lubricated them with - should be light oil not grease.

Yeah I’ve stripped it all, cleaned the pawls/ springs and re lubed with light oil and the pawls seem to be moving freely. I’ve never seen a freehub like it as it has a pawl spring (like a circular retaining wire) which seems to lock the pawls into place, it was fitted when I took it apart so presume it’s meant to be left on when the freehub is fitted? I’ve just never come across one before, cheers

The ring on my Diverge's free hub (not XY, I think it's a Joytech or Novatech) just retains the pawls and there are leaf springs under the pawls.

When it slips does it make a noise or is it virtually silent?
If it's noisy (and slips with a jolt) it's likely the pawls slipping against the toothed outer ring (toothed ring built into the hub). If it is this you'll find the pawls and or the outer ring are worn. Replacement pawls could be found but you'll need to know what the hub is.
If the hubs slips silently you might find it's the toothed outer ring slipping in the actual hub, quite rare but almost certainly means the hubs toast!

As Leroysilk says, I've also seen the toothed outer ring well worn on some fulcrum wheels. Can you post any pics?
