OK so I've laced my new hub onto my old rim using the old spokes (-5 alloy nipples that broke and I'm waiting for replacements).
Only thing is I've laced the right (non-disc) side of the hub with the spokes pointing clockwise. On my rear wheel (which I didn't build) it's laced anti-clockwise which is the same as the left (disc) side. Is this a problem? Pretty sure I followed the instructions right but I haven't trued it yet just in case (obviously I can't anyway until the replacement nipples arrive).
What seems to be the problem is that I've laced the insides of the flanges first on the new one rather than one inside and one outside before twisting.
Your best bet is to go to Roger Musson's site and download his excellent book, there is a small cost, but IMHO there is no finer reference for wheel building.
I know it's only £9 but I definately don't have the time to be reading 100 pages on how to build a wheel.
Anyway my questions been answered by his front cover - shows the same arrangement as I've used on my new one, only I'm one spoke out of phase.
😀
If you want to get anal about wheel building you can lengthy debates about the 4 different ways to lace up a standard 3 cross wheel but the truth is, it doesn't really matter. For the record, I prefer the shimano method even though I use Roger's book. He admits himself, the only reason he uses the method he does is because it's the one he learned.
I would have done it the other way, the disc side is OK, but the I'd have put the inner and outer spokes the other way round on the drive side, (probably makes naff all difference in reality).
Will be fine.
Totally fine, in fact I think your lacing pattern is "correct" for a front, disc wheel. Rear wheels are different because of the drive forces.
