Got a slight issue with the rear shifting (3x9).
It was skipping under load but a new freehub bush has just sorted that. I'm still left with a shifting problem in the middle gears though. It takes one or one and a half pedal revolutions before it'll shift up through the middle (4,5,6) rings. During that time it feels ike there's no load/I'm spinning for half of a revolution.
Apart from that there's a new cable and new shifter. Chain and cassette aren't that old or showing signs of wear. Can't see anything obviously wrong with the mech. I'm all out of ideas to be honest, and seem to be chasing it round and round.
Any help appreciated before I drop it at the LBS.
Thanks.
If its indexed correctly, is the 'b' screw adjusted correctly?
If it's the middle cogs of the cassette then most likely cable tension, which can change not long after replacement. Make small adjustments to barrel adjuster on shifter or rear mech if there is one. Don't adjust the screws unless you're having problems at either extreme of the cassette.
Have a really good look to ensure the cassette is assembled correctly.
could be all of the above but most likely its due to cable stretch. most gear cables come pre-stretched i think but they still stretch a bit when in use. so after a few rides they will stretch a bit more and this will mean the gears dont shift as crisply. you can eliminate this by adding more tension to the cable using the barrel adjuster on the shifter and possibly the mech if it has one
Thanks all, will adjust the cable tension some more and see how that goes. Did try this on the stand but when it upshifted perfectly it was reluctant to downshift off the largest ring.
Does it make a difference if you adjust tension at the mech or shifter? Can't see that it would.
Also, the B screw was set correctly, but I have tried adjusting this either way with no change.
Cheers, will try tensioning it again and see how that goes on the ride home.
Mech hanger alignment?
Look at your gears from the back...check to see if the hanger is align with top gear when on it ..if not tighten the cable till it does.......and the same on the bottom gear........once sorted the rest should fall into place
Apart from that there's a new cable and new shifter.
You mean derailleur or shift lever?
I suspect: worn mech, B tension, cable tension.

Shift lever.
Checked everything else and am suspecting a worn mech to be honest. It's not cable tension, mech alignment, stops, or, I think B-tension screw.
Just a note on the B tension screw though, I had it as close to the chainset as it would without catching and have backed it off gradually and this has made no difference. There's not much else is there?
Will photograph my mech tomorrow and will need some advice on replacing it as I don't have a clue what model I need these days (it's XT 9 speed, that's all I know!).
Thanks all.
