My good mate has purchased a Titus Fireline Ti from from O-O / P-X to build up into a nice trail bike to suit our middle aged preferences...nothing too steep and technical.

There will be a set of 120mm travel Sid forks going on.

Headset purchased is a Superstar Slackerizer.

So...good idea to fit this (according to specs, the standard head angle is 67.5 deg)?

Anything to watch out for when fitting such a headset?

Thanks all.

Only the obvious thing that you must do a good job of orientating the headset properly, something you don’t usually have to do at all

You have to get it in straight, i.e. the marks facing directly forward.
You need to ensure you get the cups the right way round, otherwise you could install one forward one backward
You cant really put 2 cups in at once, one at a time is better.

Thats all really.

Put it in the right way around! A mechanic who was briefly at my LBS made my bike steeper, not slacker which I noticed before I left the shop. So he took it out - and put it back in the wrong way again. Thankfully it was at least third time lucky!

Situation not helped by PX having the wrong headset listed on their specs for the frame.

They note ZS44 EC49 but the frame is 44mm top and bottom....

So....wrong headset ordered from Superstar and offered up....hopefully they will accept a return....

Given the headtube is actually 44mm top and bottom and 100mm length, forks are tapered, then I believe the correct Slackeriser should be T8-2 rather than T5-2 ordered due to PX description... Anyone agree?

A 44mm headtube can run either a ZS44 or an EC49 lower headset.

OK, thanks.

So, we need some help.

If you were ordering a Slackerizer headset from Superstar to suit the Titus Fireline Evo frame - 16" - currently listed on O-O / P-X, to suit a tapered steerer fork, which one would you order?

Thanks.

I ordered one last week for my frame with a straight 44mm 100mm long head tube. I've not installed it yet though.

I ordered T8-1 EC44/EC44 90-100mm Taper Steerer, but I think T8-2 would fit too. That was out of stock when I placed my order.

Re fitting, I was planning on marking the frame with a mark on some tape so I could see if it starts to get out of alignment during fitting. There are videos on YouTube showing fitting them.

Incorrect, it can run ZS44 or EC44. EC49 requires a 49mm ID headtube.

Given that the headtube on the Fireline is a cylinder, it is safe to assume it has a 44mm constant ID, so it can only accept 44mm headset cups (ZS44 or EC44).

Maybe a bit late but, I'm a fan of these things but I wouldn't fit one on day one, try the bike as intended first. That'll also mean that if you do fit it, you'll be more aware of the change, and more able to see what it's achieving or not.

People make it sound overly complicated but I literally just eyeball the middle of the headtube, line up the mark, rubber mallet it.

All well and good but in this case that would mean buying another headset

You can use a headset press, but they don't go in straight because of the offset so you need to keep adjusting/whacking it straight. The hammer and block of wood method works.

Yup. But considering the value of the frame, forks etc it's a pretty small investment for a load of extra info.

Put the headset cups in freezer overnight.
Don't use headset press as cups will twist around tap in gently with block of wood and hammer, don't forget to grease cups and frame.
Good luck.
