Given clear weather tomorrow I might give it a go. Easiest way up is the bridleway from Latrigg yes?
This time of year is it best to just turn round and come down same way or are there other more interesting descents that will still be rideable this time of year?
Based in and riding from Keswick for the week if that makes any difference.
Back down the main path will be pretty dull. Entirely dependant on conditions up there, but ullock pike will be nice and quiet.
The climb will be seriously arduous, judging by Helvellyn [url=
(climbing not riding). Soft sugary snow and deep drifting above 750m on North through East slopes. The central fells passes loop (stake, rossett ghyll, styhead) was clear and good on Sunday.
Edit - sorry, just read that you weren't riding!.
Skiddaw is possibly the worst carry ,push, ride from Laterig i can think of in the lakes, but it has by far the best ridge line descent in the uk namely ullock ridge (well i think so anyway) best done on a evening really, but mid week should be ok, just be uber polite to the walkers as its a footpath. i think much of the ice and snow has gone. This is not easy riding though and its not categorised as everyones cup of tea, ,theres only a hand full of the local night riding scene ever cleaned it,enjoy if you love fast techy riding its awesome.
Agree with everything he says!
My alltime fav!,
However, judging by the remote pockets of snow there are in other places, Ullock will be tricky in places, but a giggle non the less!
I`m one of those "few" that Gav mentioned....cleared it...Up as well!
Seriously though, there will be some pockets of "unrideable" snow as some of the track is North facing..... 😯
You're just making me nervous now.
Might be doing it tomorrow to 🙂

I love Skiddaw/ Ullock but you're not familiar with the route and I'm not sure that the conditions are optimal for a first attempt!
Let us know what it`s like?,
We bailed at Carlside Tarn (and went down Carlside) a week ago as the snow was very questionable...., However, it has been mild with a little rain since then....
Enjoy!!, It is THE BEST! 😆
daylight? Pansies
The straight up and down isn't really worth it, it can get exposed and grim up there and the speeds you reach coming down the front make things really cold.
Be careful off the top going the other way if you don't have good visibility too.
Seems a fair amount of common sense is needed. Will take a good long look at conditions tomorrow before heading off (will spin round Borrowdale instead if it looks rough, but forecast is sun and little cloud).
Want to do it for the 'adventure' rather than Strava so not fussed about walking sections if needed.
Just a thought - it's half term this week. I'd be wary of heading onto footpaths during the daytime when there are significantly more walkers about. Wait until it's quiet, then give it a go.
The fact it's 1/2 term is why I'm up here. Don't get that many chances to hit the proper hills at non-peak times.
Was out walking yesterday and actually not that many folks about on a reasonably busy route so hoping it'll be OK. I'll make sure I have my polite head on.
ah half term, I may know someone who may have been up there who may have met a large group of ramblers who may have been guided round by somebody who looked a lot like Chris Bonnington, it seems there is no amount of politeness that can get you out of that awkward situation (apparently)
If you want some grub the Filling station cafe only a shot walk away from the foot of Skiddaw

Hmmmnnn, if the cloud soon doesn't lift as the Met Office says it should then the Bash it is. Might tack Lonscale on to the end if I have time.
Discretion, valour and all that...
Yeah it does help if you can see where to go on the scree if you don't know where you are going.
Try the Frith Wood option after after the gulley on the Whatendlath descent for something different
Is that the cheeky right hand trail that leads off the bridleway before the 5 bar gate that starts the final section down to Rosthwaite?
I'd maybe give Frith Wood a miss (sorry Mike); there's a tree down blocking the path. If you're happy with technical descents, you might enjoy carrying up to Hause Gate from Manesty, turn around and come back down. Short but fun.
fair enough was pre christmas when I was up there, was my first reminder of wet slippery rocks...
it's half term this week. I'd be wary of heading onto footpaths during the daytime
Even the bridleways - Catbells Terrace is a bugger when its busy. Go for one of the alternative (cheekier) options
Hause Gate - steps down from Cat Bells yes?
Did the Bash this time last year too. Only saw one small family group of walkers on Catbells bridleway. Riding out on a grey day has its advantages.
Yep, the dip between Cat Bells and Maiden Moor.
