I have picked up a pair of wheels, but they are without skewers. So before I go and buy a set of Shimano q/r' s are there any others I should consider?

In all honesty, no - stick with Shimano

Mt Zoom are excellent if you want light. Shimano if functionality is the sole criteria, unbeatable in use.

DT Swiss ones are very nice and secure. The spinny push button jobbies, whatever they are called

DT RWS are good. Different system to the usual cam stuff and seems very secure.

Salsa are the only ones I would consider other than shimano.

Shimano deffo for functionality & reliability although I quite like the Halo hex key skewers for a clean look (and they're cheap too).
