You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
My son has handed back the Pompino I gave him several years ago. It's probably done about 15,000 miles in that time. Absolutely everything is worn out, nothing has been replaced except tyres and brake blocks. It looks like it's never been cleaned but well oiled (good lad) - I've just tried cleaning it and it's still caked with muck.
It's the early model 135mm OLD rear.
The good news is the frame is straight and undented and the paint is ok.
So hang it on the wall until he wears out the bike I gave him to replace it? Surely no one can go without a Pompino for long.
Or turn it into something interesting?
Maybe a belt drive conversion like I did for my own Pompino?
Will reasonably fat 650B tyres fit?
Or fit a Cambiogear 14 speed front chainring? - or the Browning Automatic one? Oooh, and an Alfine 8 at the rear x 14 up front = 112 speeds. That's a lot of confusion for a simple singlespeeder.
Or trick it out with carbon and turn it into an oxymoron - a light Pompino.
Damn, the possibilities are endless and I should be building my new wheels for the 'Puffer.
Or maybe I should just not drink this coffee and go to bed.... 🙂
Did you lose this same question a while back mate?
If not I'm having big deja vu issues tonight.... Which is highly possible! Lol
It came to the fore because I had to move it to get at my fat bike - I had been carefully avoiding it, but it's looking more imperative now I have several other higher priorities.
So probably an attack of caffeine induced procrastination. 🙂
I've an old Pompetamine which I think is the same frame as the Pompino (it came with an Alfine IGH rather than single speed), 700x37c are the largest tyres I've been able to fit. Not sure about "road plus".
I've recently had 650b x 1.9's in a frame I have that uses the same chainstay as the Pompino. This video is from a very long time ago when I was trying to develop this model from the Pompino. This didn't really develop into the Pompetamine (as I didn't design that one), but it was fun.
My dad now uses same frame as an indoor trainer.
If it's Large i'll buy it off you...

Thanks for that info. 1.9" sounds like just enough volume for comfortable gravel cruising while maintaining roadability.
That's the wheels sorted then. I've pulled a set of 650b rims out of the attic, now to find some hubs with the right number of holes. 🙂
In the cold light of day, my gearing fantasies above sound unappealing. I think a dingle speed would be more appropriate with a ratio for road and one for gravel.
Alternatively a 3 speed S-A which does the same job, but my stock does not include one with a 135mm OLD, so that's unlikely.
I've grabbed a big box, and as I rake through my attic and shed looking for bits for the 'Puffer bike, anything interesting I come across that might suit the Pompino will go into it.
However any ideas, mad or otherwise will be listened to. 🙂

If it’s Large i’ll buy it off you…
It's XL, but the golden rule applies.
Never sell a Pompino or a 1x1 because you'll just end up having to buy another.
(I'm assuming my son will want it back when he sees it looking all clean and shiny again 🙂 )
Bugger, the rims have no brake track.
That means find some other rims or drum brakes...
Found a nice NOS Hope Ti front hub in the shed though. 🙂
Epicyclo i have a disk converter for track ends...
Interested?

Thanks for the offer. So have I, as I discovered when looking for the hubs.
Currently got a coaster hub sitting in front of me. The simplicity appeals. Maybe, maybe not...
Turn it into a cargo bike, something sturdy like this has got to be a good basis?
