Anyone else taking part in Sir Chris's tourde4 from Glasgow this Sunday?
It's all about raising some money for lots of cancer related charities whilst also challenging the stereotype of living with stage 4 cancer. Of course it's not easy, but some of us are managing to thrive and love life despite the diagnosis and sometimes poor prognosis. Nils Amelinckx was a big inspiration for me and I hope, in some small way, to keep that positivity and inspiration going.
I've chosen to raise money for Macmillan. If you really wanted, you could have a peek Here maybe 🙂
Stanley (Stage 4 and loving life)
I was too late to get my entry in, and the second longest one was full, my fault. Hope it all goes well 🤞
Iain (successful prostatectomy surgery 11 years ago)
Donated @stanley good luck.
My sister died of a rare cancer in Feb this year, and although I don't think she got a lot help from McMillan (stuff happened very fast in the end) I know they are amazing for others.
I'm off in wave 3 on Sunday to do the red ride with a bunch of friends. Not sure I'm going to finish as I'm 8 weeks on from breaking my back, and the pain my stop me. Going to give it my best go though.
Didn’t know about this and not possible for me to get there too
Saw him not long back out on his eMTB very much enjoying his life.
Good luck Stanley, I've donated too.
Is that Chinley Churn in the background of the main picture on your blog site?
I've donated to the just giving page of a former colleague who's doing it. Best of luck Stanley, both in the event and for your continued wellbeing.
I hope, in some small way, to keep that positivity and inspiration going.
You are. I'm having my own tussle with PC and your posts in the past and this one have been a great help. Keep it up!
Good luck all (especially Stanley). And keep on with raising awareness, the more people know the better the chances
Recently donated to a mate's Brighton Tri Justgiving for macmillan after his wife had a colon tumor removed.
Thanks so much for the donations and positive comments... those comments really give me a boost 🙂
@IHN I think so! My memory is so poor these days! All of those landscape shots were taken from around the Hayfield corner of the Peak.
I'm starting in "wave 6" on Sunday... doing the 90km Red loop. Not sure what I'll be wearing yet as weather looks to be a bit variable.
Not @stanley, but I did take part yesterday. It was a cracking event, mainly due to the fantastic support from folks on the side of the road. Such a positive change from any other charity event I've done. The weather was off and on (got properly soaked on the main climb on the route). So happy to do the full 56 miles with a fractured vertebrae (happened 8 weeks ago) and a wrecked left knee after a big crash earlier in the year.
A brilliant day 🙂
A great route, once out of the city, on a mixture of smooth tarmac and crumbling road surfaces. Just the right amount of climbing and great views. Feed stations could do with improving... the one at 30km involved a gravel ride to get there; not great on fast and flimsy road tyres! And no "proper" food... just lots of energy bars, gels, etc (and bananas). The feed stations were staffed by the most enthusiastic and friendly people though 🙂
Amazing support from the locals who lined much of the route; clapping, ringing cowbells and shouting encouragement. I spent half the ride waving to people!
It was great to talk to so many people touched by cancer. I was particular moved by a young lady that I talked to early in the ride; she told me of her experience with cancer of the appendix (I hope I've remembered that correctly). She had been through so many operations and the damned tumours kept returning, yet she was continuing to exercise and remain so upbeat. Going through so much, yet looking amazing and displaying such resilience. I was humbled.
Great to see so many sporting stars in real life and everyone in high spirits. Brilliant!
I really hope that Sir Chris makes this an annual event. Lessons learnt by me for next time: Make a weekend of it; take a slower bike; absorb the unique atmosphere; encourage some friends to join me.
Thanks again for all the support 🙂
Excellent report and good effort! If it does become an annual event I really fancy doing it.
Great to hear, I had hoped to do the middle distance one, but was too late to get my entry in and it was sold out. I wonder how much of the £65 entry fee goes to Prostate Cancer research ? Hope it’s not like the Scotland Etape rides where very little goes to charity.
I did the 10am virtual one on Zwift, the Zwift Companion messaging during the ride was very humbling.
I've no idea where the entry fee goes; however, there must be fairly significant costs to put this on: paid staff, equipment, medals, insurance, etc.
I think it's the individuals' fund raising efforts that make up the money really. And the choice of charities was fairly solid...no dodgy ones!
