You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Gutted to hear the news. I'm inferring a tabloid had the "scoop" and was about to break it. Sobering reminder that even the healthiest of people are not immune to the awful disease
For those who don't know yet, it's cancer.
You’re joking - that’s so ************
FFS I know it’s wrong to think this but there are several people in the world who this news would only bring me joy and it’s so unfair it’s not them.
If anyone can kick its arse it’s him.
i wish him well for a full and speedy recovery (and anyone else who is suffering from it).
Given that the man has said he did not want this public and is only commenting because some scumbag media outlet forced his hand I wonder if we should pass on our best wishes then move on.
That's a real shock - best wishes, if there's anyone who'll push 100% to beat it, it's him!
"For the sake of my young family, I had hoped to keep this information private but regrettably our hand has been forced."
From the Beeb - that's just shit, what happened to the right to privacy? 🙁
“For the sake of my young family, I had hoped to keep this information private but regrettably our hand has been forced.”
Absolute scum behaviour. I wonder which newspaper it was? I assume one of the Sundays, since he's put it out on the Friday so the scumbag writer involved doesn't get the splash.
Am I allowed to say **** Cancer, here?
(clearly not 😉 )
A massive chunk of love to the big man.
Terrible news today that he has said it is terminal, 2-4 years to live. And then, as if life hasn’t dealt him a shit enough card, his wife has an aggressive form of MS.
life is inexplicably cruel sometimes
So much respect for the big man. The Sunday Times have an article tomorrow, an interview with Chris. The diagnosis is terminal. His wife has MS too. Words fail me.

Shocking news tonight, prostate cancer really is a b……
Such terrible news. At 48yrs old (I think) and with a young family. I really hope that he beats his diagnosis.
As for how the news has come out - which he seems to have been forced to announce before it was leaked. So many journalists are just pure scum. They would do anything for a story with no consideration of the people involved and their lives.
Just seen this on sky news.
As others have already mentioned, life can be very cruel.
Thoughts with him and his loved ones.
How sad. No words really but hope he gets as much time with his family as possible.
How very sad.
**** Cancer!
FFS
I thought he was looking really well during the Olympics coverage and assumed he'd got the all clear.
Absolutely horrible news
That's just such sad news. When my wife got his autobiography signed by him for my birthday, he was genuinely surprised that there was such a queue to meet him, despite the book signing being in the centre of Edinburgh, his home city.
What a nice, talented, intelligent and humble bloke.
Just seen this. How #£%£&. Don't really know what else to say.
I use to live in the block next to him at uni. My mate was his neighbour. Apparently a really nice bloke. Always out on his bike when we were all getting smashed
He left our uni after a term to go to Edinburgh. Next time I saw him was when some familiar looking bloke on tv broke the world record to win gold in Athens.
Really saddened to hear his horrible news tbh..
Genuinely shocked and saddened to read this. Especially after seeing him on TV only last night at the track world's - all seemed OK, and dare I say it, normal.
I grew up watching Sir Chris, and his talents on the track were, and still are some the greatest ever.
This news is dreadfully sad
Hi s program about cycling in Japan was a brilliant watch. Very very sad for him and wis wife who has MS... and his family.
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cj4dr9xdxgro
Terrible news, I really hope his family have the support they need with his wife's illness as well.
One of the few pros that basically noone had anything bad to say about, that is utterly utterly crap.
Didn't know about his wife's MS either, life is just so crushingly unfair sometimes.
Aa above I hope they have lots of support set up for the kids.
Just seen this, feel really numb with shock at the news. Can't imagine how you deal with the news you have a finite amount of time left.
Well that's shit. Hats off to the man for continuing to be an inspiration.
Shite. Live every day, folks.
Glad he has now had the courage to announce it.
Been watching him on TV for a while looking phenomenal given his diagnosis
At least he has a great team looking after him
^^ It’s been pretty conclusively proven that the links between prostrate cancer and cycling are weak or non existent, though I guess that’s based on more average riders than professionals who spend so much time in the saddle.
Iain, prostate cancer survivor, so far..
Very sad day. And awful for the children. According to the Sunday Times they haven’t told the kids about their mother’s MS. Met him at work, he was of course as lovely as everyone says. It would be nice to see even more of his commentating on track as health permits, but hopefully the children will get some more memories in the coming years.
* Cancer
* MS
Worked on both and hit hard personally by the first.
Cancer really doesn't give a f##k does it? Even an multiple olympic gold medal winner up against it. I hope he can live for a long as possible. This news hits really hard atm.
Shocked.. I thought and hoped he was well again. Maybe it's the way he's a mix of real life superhero on a bike as well as such a good guy that makes it hit hard. He always has a moment for people, all that good feeling he's put into the world will be coming back to him, really hope it helps him and his family for a long while ahead.
Absolutely heart-breaking, very sad to hear about the family news. 🙁
This has hit me particularly hard this morning. I'm so gutted for Chris and his family. He's achieved so much and is still so young.
I want to try and help him. I'm in a similar boat... Stage 4 incurable* prostate cancer with metastatic spread to lymph nodes. 53 years old at diagnosis (2 years ago). I've been through the chemotherapy and radiotherapy that Chris is going through. I'm also likely on the same hormone therapy. It's been tough but I'm really well at the moment.
I just hope Chris can get through this treatment and have more good years than had been suggested.
*I refuse to call it terminal. It's incurable but treatable.
As I've mentioned several times on here... Get yourselves tested!!
Yes, sending positive vibes too, to Stanley (looking great when I saw you last), also Sir Chris who’s been a favourite in our household for years.
let’s hope that science and medicine can find some cures for both MS and most cancers in the next few years.
Hopefully not a daft question, more due to no idea how it all works...
Not 50 yet, but how do you go about getting tested?
Is it just a case of calling the GP for an appointment and asking for a test?
I'd be keen to get tested just to make sure I'm clear...
I got a slight torn hernia doing Zwift last January but as a precaution my GP gave me a prostate exam. Just ask.
Being thinking about Chris Hoy all day as this shows how indiscriminate this terrible disease is. Lost my best mate 30 years ago to it.
I felt very sad when I heard this news yesterday. Always been a great fan of Sir Chris
Not 50 yet, but how do you go about getting tested?
Just call the GP. Combo of blood test and physical exam. I had a test at 48 as my dad had just been diagnosed and the consultant felt that put me at increased risk.
My children loved their Hoy bikes, riding through the woods to school, trail centres and even a few races, great bikes. Note that a prostate test can also pick up other issues (within a week of mine I'd had a further 3 urine tests, a couple of blood tests and 4 ultrasound scans - thankfully it was nothing serious)
As I’ve mentioned several times on here… Get yourselves tested!!
I was diagnosed at same age as Sir Chris is now, 48. Thankfully mine was caught at Stage 2 and was still contained in the prostate, which was removed 10 years ago next month and so far I remain cancer free.
There are a few GPs on here who will be along shortly, they usually are, to say that the PSA blood screening test is not much good and will only be applied by your GP if you have other risk factors, which is about right unfortunately.
In mu case, I was at the doctor anyway, on the back of a bad bike tumble, and mentioned that I was up at the loo a few times most nights, so he suggested checking my PSA as a precaution. It was elevated and they retested it a month later and it was the same, so that led to more tests and I had surgery a few weeks later.
If you have any concerns it is best to have a proper chat with your GP, and be aware that they may reluctant to do a PSA blood test if you have no other indicators of risk.
Good article in the Guardian by William Fotheringham partly covering how he's dealing with it all.
Well one company have decided to use this news for some marketing. Not sure it’s going to help them though.
Absolute bastards.
Seems they've taken the reel down or it's been taken down for them.

One to avoid buying from
Nah judging by the number of times he's posted the same 2 comments it's an attempt to dilute and hide all the negative feedback.
I'll play devil's advocate.
IF the scientific research is true... Companies continuing to use carcinogenic ingredients in lube is pretty terrible, why shouldn't a link be drawn? Maybe we've got our heads in the sand and it's about time the science was brought to life with a very high profile (and yes very sad) case. He's not making light of Hoy's situation, he's calling those companies out and also the fact his company (and others) use non-carcinogenic ingredients.
I don't really see the problem but feel free to flame.
Edit: is it any different to calling out fossil fuel companies in light of the LA fires?
Companies continuing to use carcinogenic ingredients in lube is pretty terrible, why shouldn’t a link be drawn?
My understanding is that the carcinogen is used during the manufacturing process, whereas PTFE in itself is not classed as a carcinogen.
So there's a strong argument for not using PTFE for any product, which would be a fair point if he just said that.
But in this case, it's very thin argument that the end user is being exposed or at higher risk. If you look at his comments, he talks about the 'production of PTFE'.
So he must know that a lube containing PTFE has a very low chance of including the PFOAs that ARE a carcinogen, so he must know that the chance of Sir Chris Hoy's cancer being caused this way is vanishingly small compared to all other possibilities, including genetics, exposure to some other environmental factor, or the potentially inflammatory effects down below of being in the saddle for hours every day for the past 30 years (also not a proven association, although there is some evidence).
The premise of the video is IMO entirely wrongheaded, and ends up using Sir Chris' tragic personal circumstances as a method of attacking a commercial rival.
why shouldn’t a link be drawn?
Absolutely no problem with someone drawing a link. Is the link being used in a peer reviewed and published Lancet article or for pedalling the author’s product?
why shouldn’t a link be drawn?
Because with something like prostate cancer it's impossible to say what caused it.
Because with something like prostate cancer it’s impossible to say what caused it.
And it is a source of considerable anxiety to many people with cancer who wonder if it was something they ate, drank, or came into contact with that has caused this.
Certainly when I developed cancer in my 20s it was a while before I learned to stop worrying whether I was still in contact with the substance responsible. <Cracks open another can of Diet Coke>.
I see they are now getting dragged on the Road.cc news section, Muc-off have responded to say they haven't used PTFE for years due to 'environmental concerns'.
To be clear, we do not use PTFE in any of our current product range as we took a decision many years ago to become 100% PTFE free due to environmental concerns. We are in the process of reviewing our options regarding these false allegations.
Yet another way in which the original video was inaccurate and misleading . GreenOil's 'CEO' needs to learn when to start fact-checking, and more importantly, when to stop digging.
https://road.cc/content/news/cycling-brands-really-poor-taste-chris-hoy-cancer-video-312071
He has obviously jumped on-board with X and Meta's stance of removing fact checkers...let the population make up their own minds, etc!
Never a good sign...
telling when the only positive comment on the post comes from a poster called
"greendrinkslondon"
doesnt take a genuis and even less digging to verify who that account belongs to .....
https://www.greendrinks.org/London
Doesn't he know that astroturf is a well-known source of PFAS 'forever chemicals'?
What a silly sausage. I disagree with the current trend of insisting that anyone who says something stupid should be hung, but bloody eck, what a plonker.
Sir Chris is, quite rightly, a level above royalty and you'd have to be monumentally bad at judgement to think this was a good idea.
From the little i know bladder cancer has a link with chemical exposure. Pristate cancer has no known environmental links
None of the Green Oil range has been animal tested. The only animals we test on are you the rider. In the spirit of Anita Roddick, we are against animal testing.
it’s quite a bold claim that the product is not carcinogenic if it (or its components) have not been tested on animals! Whilst their lube might be non-hazardous (according to its own MSDS which described it as non flammable but then provides quite specific fire fighting instructions!). Some of their other products are not - including eg their Apple degreaser which is apparently only carcinogenic in Germany! Whilst that probably tells you more about their marketing and proof reading process it does highlight that sometimes wild claims about product safety are unwise. Eg the lube advises that if it comes into contact with skin you should wash it off with plenty of soap and water - which is presumably what people do with any lube, reducing the risk of exposure to any harmful ingredients. Oddly whilst described as non hazardous the labelling specifically says “DO NOT DRINK” and the safety sheet tells you how to treat accidental ingestion.
which is why I felt the need to respond to this:
I’ll play devil’s advocate.
IF the scientific research is true… Companies continuing to use carcinogenic ingredients in lube is pretty terrible, why shouldn’t a link be drawn?
There’s carcinogens all over the place, since we don’t drink or bathe in lube its risk may be low, whilst not all carcinogens are equally risky. In fact I suspect there is greater risk of exposure from cleaning fluids - which green oil’s comes with plenty of warning labels!
Maybe we’ve got our heads in the sand and it’s about time the science was brought to life with a very high profile (and yes very sad) case.
delighted if people post actual science - but since their product has a secret formula and no public safety testing data we are reliant on the manufacturer’s own assessment. IF something cycling related contributed to Chris’ condition then we should know, but he knows it almost certainly had nothing to do with the oil on his chain (which he probably didn’t even apply himself!). Suggesting it did would detract from other causes which might (but probably didn’t) contribute - like saddle design, nutritional supplements, training regimes, etc. I sell a product with some vaguely better eco claims is not science.
He’s not making light of Hoy’s situation, he’s calling those companies out and also the fact his company (and others) use non-carcinogenic ingredients.
i don’t think he’s making light of the situation, but he is attempting to exploit it for his own commercial gain..

Bit of follow-up news on the Green Oil position in case anyone is interested.
PTFE is a stable polymer used extensivley in medical implants amongst other things. Plumbers have been using it for donkeys years.
In the MANUFACTURE of PTFE there are other polymers created and used. These are collectively known as PFAS polymers and PTFE is one of them. Some of these PFAS polymers are known toxins and carcinogens. PTFE is not one of the problem PFAS chemicals. The problem is you can't make PTFE currently without ending up with some of these PFAS polymers being emmited and found in the environment around the manufacturing factories. That's what was the subject of the film Dark Water that was referenced in Mr Green Oils misplaced marketing. Black Water is not a film about PTFE. It's about PFAS polymers. PTFE is one of them but not one of the bad ones.
That then means it's extremely unlikely that Sir Chris Hoy's cancer is a result of PFAS (PTFE is not a known carcinogen) unless Sir Chris was involved in the manufacture of MUC OFF's products. I'd say it's safe to say he was just an end user.
That's why there's now legal action against Green Oil.
Could MucOff take legal action as well, it's effectively their products that were accused of being carcinogenic?
He's deleted the nonsense but the damage is done. I'll piss on my chain rather than use stuff from that brand.
Zero trust in their methods given the massive holes in their ethics and science.
Him taking the posts down has satisfied Sir Chris' management, but it may not have dealt with mucoff's concerns.
It's amazing how some people will just keep digging and doubling down.
It's the least sincere apology possible. And he only posted it to Instagram and not his Facebook or YouTube channels.
He's obviously a huge ? end.
Imagine being Chris Hoy and having to deal with stuff like this - last thing he needs.
It’s the least sincere apology possible.
It's weird how he apologises for the post his company made as if a) it happened without his knowledge or approval, and b) he's not the only employee.
Anyone else do the Zwift ride this morning? Around 3,000 participants as Chris launched his Tour de 4 charity fundraising. Zwift are matching donations up to £50,000 too.
https://www.gofundme.com/f/tourde4-zwift
There's a real-life Tour de 4 ride planned for 7th September, starting and ending in Glasgow. (I can't make it).
