You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Hey
I have an "old" Singular Swift with an eccentric bottom bracket. I have recently noticed the BB has some play in it. I remember Singular use to have an article on their website about servicing the eccentric bottom bracket but I can no longer find it.
Does anyone have any advice on either, a servicing the eccentric bottom bracket and/or b replacing the BB and what BB I should replace it with?
Is it the eccentric BB shell that has the play, or the BB inside it?
If it's the latter then just replace the BB with whatever's in there at the moment, same as you'd replace any threaded BB.
Think the Swifts were Phil Wood BBs, so not a huge amount to them. Loosen off the 4mm bolts underneath the shell and slide it out. Give it a clean, re-grease the shell and pop it back in, torque the bolts up to 4mn.
I think the play is in the BB, I am pretty sure it is. I will have a closer look tonight, I wasn't sure if I should take the eccentric shell out, or try to remove the BB whilst the shell is in the frame. I will report back. Thank you for such a swift (groan) response, much appreciated.
Easiest to just remove the BB from the EBB whilst it's in the frame, just like you would any other BB.
Once it's out, you might want to then whip the EBB out and give it a clean and grease, especially if you've not looked at it for a while. It's a solid unit, no expanding wedges or anything to worry about, so really straightforward.
Much easier to remove the BB from the EBB while it's still tight in the frame - if it's been in there a while, it might need some elbow grease to break it loose, and the frame is about the best thing to keep the EBB still while you remove the BB from it. Once the BB is out, loosen the set screws holding the EBB in the frame, push it out, clean all and regrease the surfaces, back in, and then fit the new BB.
And make sure you put the EBB back in the right way round, otherwise the LH/RH threads will be reversed and the BB cups will unscrew themselves as you pedal.
If you like, you can guess how I know that.
