Any good? What's the frame weight?
I've been here before.......want something for Grizedale forest; should really get an MTB but I just can't bring myself to do it.
Describe your attitude toward mountain bikes.
It'll help rule out anything too suitable.
Let us know of any firms you feel that are too common for your delicate sensibilities, or fashionable frame colours that really don't match your hair or clothes.
Which wheelsize matches your aspirations?
What kind of car will you be driving it around in?
Would you prefer it to be designed by a man with a beard, personality issues, or both?
...I have a canti version- great bike.

THanks, had not seen that. 2.82Kg sounds pretty heavy......

They're not cool enough for me.
...but that would build to about 9Kg overall- 19lbs ish. Still light enough for its use?

Yeh, you're right. It's maybe not as heavy as I thought. I think the headsets are over 200g.....
Bump.
Still considering this. Or something similar. Any other frames worth a look? Preferably something lighter.

Too small

It's Ti, it's an on one and it's too expensive for me.
I think unless you go for good carbon frame or a Ti frame the weight saving isn't massive. Some of the Kinesis frames in Al look good. I looked at the Bowman as well- too small for me too. having said that See Niner RLT 9 for a lighter steel frame- not cheap though.
Get the Kite. 19lbs is pretty decent (going on guess above). It rides well and it's pretty.
It'll still ride well and be still be pretty in 5 years time. It'll do you for lots of different riding, you'll get attached to it and not want to sell it.
Fair amount of enthusiasm for the Ritchey Swiss Cross. You'd have to like red, though.
Or black for the disc version. Seems a shame since red is definitely the fastest colour
@Davidtaylforth
I think we're both in the market for the same sort of frame. As a cheap alternative, the mango ar is getting some great press. For a couple of hundred quid I may take a punt.
The welds put some more expensive bikes to shame. And internal routing with clearance for 42mm rubber.
Yeh, I mean the Kite does look pretty good, I just expected the weight to be a bit less, or perhaps I wanted it to be a bit less. I think the Ritchey is less than 2kg for the frame, plus it doesn't need a 200g+ headset. Although it's not the sort of thing I'm after (probably too small and it's not got guard mounts) so perhaps not a fair comparison.
I dunno....the weight is similar to the Cotic BFe frame I had, which was suitable for downhill tracks and gap jumps.
Have yet to make up my mind, will probably just wait till something crops up on ebay. I do already have a nice disc road bike which is great; just fancied something with clearance for fat tyres so I could go round Grizedale on it. Although I had that thought last weekend when the sun was out....the weather has gone a bit shit now.
Remember the weight does include forks and headset. I think that's pretty competitive with any steel framed cross bike, including the Swiss Cross. From what I can see, the sub 2 kilo for Swiss Cross is frame only "Weight: 1941g / 4.28lbs (55cm, frame only)"

TBF, I don't really know why I give a shit. But I've had a heavy steel framed bike in the past, and it was shite. I'm sure the Singular will ride well.
I've never weighed my Kite so can't give exact figures but it's built up with 1x11 and hydraulic brakes and even with the fairly weighty WTB Nano's fitted it still doesn't feel like a heavy bike.
It certainly doesn't ride like a heavy bike, in fact I think it's heavier than the alloy Diverge that it replaced but the difference is night and day. The Diverge by comparison was a bit of a numb feeling lump but the Kite is much livelier and more enjoyable to ride.
As far as bikes go, I seem to change them fairly often but the Kite won't be getting swapped, it's too much fun!
Interested in this bike much!
Which front mech are people using with it?
I think the Cinelli Zydeco comes close too.
I'm biased but I love mine. I've had to re-evaluate my answer to the eternal 'if you could only have one bike' question. I've raced CX on it, it ridea great as a foul weather road bike with 35s and guards, and is a lot of fun on local trails with big (~42mm) tyres.
They are about as light as you can make a steel disc raked CX bike which passes safety standards without getting into very expensive tubing. IIRC the Ritchey costs more than twice as much, and is made in the same place fwiw.
I have a couple of demo bikes on the go, an L and XL - where are you?
Afraid I've not got a beard but I do a strong line in personality disorders....
If you have any other questions just let me know.
@dsb181 I'm using a Shimano CX70 on an otherwise 11speed Ultegra drivetrain and it works fine. Not quite as slick shifting as the proper 6800 mech but certainly more than usable. An inline cable adjuster helps with setup. Otherwise you are looking at a seat tube mounted cable pulley like the problem solvers, I used one of those on the prototype frame and it worked well. I believe Shimano are due to bring out an 11 speed version of the CX70.
