went for a spin on my singlespeed, I'm utterly fubarred! It's too hilly round here. There is nothing you can do in a headwind except keep trying to pedal. Gears are going back on I think.

*phones Vet with a shotgun*...putting you down is the only humane thing to do.

The true singlespeedisterers method of these conditions is to ride in the opposite direction, all downhill & with a tailwind.

Yeah but Qwerty, I had to come back! I feel pretty defeated, that was bloody hard work!

It was even harder than ever yesterday given the thick crust of melting snow and approx 2 feet of gooey mud underneath. Limited headwind though for extra toughness. Just a case of manning up a little?

surely your Singlespeeder's Beard would have cleaved a channel of windless peace like the prow of one of them boats, or indeed like Moses parting the Red Sea..?

Are you sure that it was a headwind that you were riding into and not a large immovable object..?

Kev - you ride in Snowdonia! SS is not a good idea here, especially if you're daft enough to ride into the headwind we've got today 🙂

Gears are great, the more the better ... as shown by the number of fit guys you can spin past up a steep hill if you've got the sense to have a triple and a 32 rear cassette on your road bike! It might not be hardcore but I prefer riding to walking up the hills 🙂

Calling you gay would be an insult to gays 😉

Just pop those gears back on, you know it makes sense

yeah yeah man up etc! think I'll just get a giant sprocket.
EDIt: it's not a manly thing Sue. I just converted my blue bike to singlespeed again and wondered how far I could get! Gears FTW!

no, that's far too un PC and predictable.

why would you be insulted for the acknowledgement that basically you have the power and stamina of PeeWee Herman?

That level of self awareness can take a buddist master years to attain.

Revel in you mediocrity, you unattractiveness to to possible sexual partners and your need for a dangler.

For you my friend, the path to a bland vanilla and beige decline into decrepitude is now laid out before you like the hornby railway set you will soon be playing with.

😀

*blows kiss to kevevs* next time I'm in North Wales I'll chuck an extra singlespeed in for you and drag you around to convert you back to ways of manly men with thighs of steel and beards of might.

What you want to do is fit a giant cog, so that you can ride up anything but can't pedal past about 10mph.

"Manly men with thighs of steel and beards of might" ... I'm not sure if we're ready for that kind of thing up here in North Wales 😯

Although on the other hand ... thighs of steel might be worth ditching the gears for 🙂

Edit: Kev - beards? No, just say no. Trust me on this one, I'm a girl and we know these things ...

well, I'll work on my beard AND thighs, then everyone's happy! I'll change 38t to a 32t and rear 15t to a 18t and try again. It was the wind that got me.

Bigger gears sonny Jim, bigger gears and you just have to tough the wind out, yes it hurts. Yadda yadda. 🙄
