Fitted a 14 cog to my ye olde commuter last night (38:16 was waaay too spinny) but chain now skips under load.

Chain has has some use but not stretched beyond 0.75%, I'm using a surly type tensioner (the cheap copy). and chain still looks quite tensioned. Any ideas as to why it is skipping? Would removing couple of links fix it?

Switching cogs does that.

Increase the tension on the tensioners to max. If that doesn't fix it, reduce the tension to lowest and remove a link, then slowly increase the tension until it does.
